For purpose of reducing renal accumulation of radioactivity of a known radiopharmaceutical agent, i.e., (111)In-DTPA (diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid)-D-Phe(1)-octreotide, a derivative in which p-carboxy-L-phenylalanine is substituted for D-Phe(1) was synthesized. Biodistribution study of the resultant compound having carboxy-substituted L-Phe(1) revealed that the renal accumulation was significantly lower than that of control compound having unsubstituted L-Phe(1), demonstrating that the presence of negative charge on the N-terminal amino acid of octreotide is effective to reduce the renal accumulation. This effect can be attributed to the reduction of lipophilicity and also the repulsive force arisen from the negative charge of renal brush border membrane.

Scope: The uremic toxin trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) accumulates in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is associated with its progression, cardiovascular disease, and other complications. The gut microbiota produces TMAO from substrates mainly found in red meat, eggs, and dairy. However, some saltwater fish also contain high levels of TMAO.

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) represent a class of toxic and irreversible compounds formed through non-enzymatic reactions between proteins or lipids and carbonyl compounds. AGEs can arise endogenously under normal metabolic conditions and in pathological states such as diabetes, kidney disease, and inflammatory disorders. Additionally, they can be obtained exogenously through dietary intake, particularly from foods high in fat or sugar, as well as grilled and processed items.

Cell Division Autoantigen 1 (CDA1) has been shown to play a role in enhancing transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) signaling, leading to fibrosis in diabetic kidney disease (DKD) using mouse strains with global CDA1 gene deletion. In these models, diabetes has been induced, leading to DKD in the absence of CDA1. It is still unknown whether inhibition of CDA1 activity after onset of diabetes in the presence of CDA1 can attenuate renal fibrosis in vivo.

X-linked Alport syndrome (XLAS) caused by X-linked COL4A5 gene mutation is a hereditary disease that affects mainly the kidney. XLAS patients, especially males whose single copy of the COL4A5 gene is disrupted, suffer from a life-threatening renal disease, the mechanism of which remains unclear. Renal fibrosis is a characteristic pathology observed in XLAS kidney tissue.

Although the pathogenesis of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) remains largely unclear, evidence is accumulating to suggest the systemic nature of this disease. Here, we comprehensively assessed the whole aortic tree with its major branches based on computed tomography angiography (CTA) in AAA patients compared to ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm (ATAA) patients and nonaneurysmal controls, as well as in an original mouse model of AAA in Lkb1;Myh11-Cre/ERT2 mice. The morphology and dimensions of the whole aorta (at different levels) and its major branches were compared among 47 AAA patients, 47 ATAA patients, and 46 nonaneurysmal controls based on CTA images.
