Effect of reserve protection level and governance on tree cover loss and gain.

Conserv Biol

January 2025

School of Geography, Planning, and Spatial Sciences, University of Tasmania, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.

Terrestrial protected areas are essential for biodiversity conservation, yet it is not fully understood when and how different types of protected areas are most effective in achieving specific conservation objectives. We assessed the impact of reserves on tree cover loss and gain through a case study in Tasmania, Australia. We considered varying protection levels (strict, where human activities are restricted, and multiple use) and governance types (public and private).

Achieving upcycling and circularity in the microplastic economy predominantly depends on collecting and sorting plastic waste from the source to the end-user for resource conservation. Microplastics, whether from packaging or non-packaging materials, pose a significant environmental challenge as they are often not prioritized for collection or recycling initiatives. The presence of additives impedes the quality of plastic recyclates and the persistence of microplastics as shredded resultants remain a threat to the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem and its biodiversity.

Structural stigma towards gender minority (GM; people whose current gender does not align with sex assigned at birth) people is an important contributor to minority stress (i.e., stress experienced due to one's marginalized GM identity), although existing variables are unclear in their inclusion of social norms, or societal stigma, as a key component of the construct.

Assessing the potential effects of climate change on the morphodynamics of the tropical coral reef islands in the Gulf of Mannar, Indian Ocean.

January 2025

Physical Oceanography Division, CSIR- National Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula, 403 004, Goa, India; School of Oceanography, Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR), Ghaziabad, 201 002, India. Electronic address:

Low-lying and small tropical coral reef islands around the world are extremely vulnerable to the effects of global environmental change caused by the combination of anthropogenic climate change and escalating extreme hydrodynamic events. Erosion and inundation are anticipated to physically destabilize the tropical coral reef islands, rendering them uninhabitable within the next century. Therefore, it is crucial to assess the repercussions of these hazardous events on the delicate reef island ecosystem in order to conserve and ensure sustainable management.

National scale evaluation of nutrient purification capacity in marine sediments along the coast of South Korea: A mesocosm study based in situ assessment.

Sci Total Environ

January 2025

School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Seoul National University, Seoul 08826, Republic of Korea; Research Institute of Oceanography, Seoul National University, Seoul 08826, Republic of Korea; Center for Convergence Coastal Research, Seoul National University, Siheung-si, Gyeonggi-do 15011, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

The ecosystem regulating services from tidal flats, such as removal of organic pollutants, provided by natural tidal flats are being increasingly recognized, yet quantitative evaluation remains limited. Here we evaluated a nationwide capacity of natural purification in tidal flats. Using in situ sediments from five along the Korean coast (Incheon, Gunsan, Sinan, Gwangyang, and Busan), we applied a mesocosm system informed by 18 years of riverine monitoring data from national surveys.
