Activation of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) causes numerous defects in anti-viral immunity, including suppressed CTL generation and impaired host resistance. However, despite a reduced CTL response, mice that survive infection clear the virus. Therefore, we examined the contribution of NK cells and pro-inflammatory cytokines to viral clearance in influenza virus-infected mice exposed to TCDD, the most potent AhR agonist. Infection caused transient increases in pulmonary TNFalpha, IL-1, and IFNalpha/beta levels, but neither the kinetics nor magnitude of this response was affected by AhR activation. No IL-18 was detected at any time point examined. Exposure to TCDD enhanced NK cell numbers in the lung but did not affect their IFNgamma production. Furthermore, depletion of NK cells did not alter anti-viral cytolytic activity. In contrast, removal of CD8+ T cells ablated virus-specific cytolytic activity. These results demonstrate that the pulmonary CTL response to influenza virus is robust and few CTL are necessary for viral clearance.

Methods: We retrospectively reported the data of children with any immunodeficiency with COVID-19 who received N/R treatment between March 2022 and June 2023 at the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital.

Even though they are species-restricted, cytomegaloviruses are distributed across a wide range of different mammalian species in which they cause systemic infection involving many different cell types. Regulated, or programmed cell death has a recognized potential to eliminate infected cells prior to completion of viral replication and release of progeny.

In sepsis, a balanced pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory response results in the bacterial clearance and resolution of inflammation, promoting clinical recovery and survival. Semaphorins, a large family of secreted and membrane-bound glycoproteins, are newly recognized biomarkers and therapeutic targets in immunological and neoplastic disorders. Although semaphorins might also be a crucial part of host defense responses to infection, their role in sepsis is yet to be determined.

By the end of 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting from the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), had diffused widely across the globe, with 770 million infected individuals and over 7 million deaths reported. In addition to its high infectivity and pathogenicity and its rapid mutation rate, the unique capacity of SARS-CoV-2 to circumvent the immune system has also contributed to the widespread nature of this pandemic. SARS-CoV-2 elicits the onset of innate immune system activation and initiates antiviral responses once it has infected the host.
