A noncovalently bound multilayered thin film in which individual layers are linked by metal ligand interactions undergoes a photochemically initiated permanent change in surface wettability. The film consists of three separate layers: a SAM on gold of 4-[(10-mercaptodecyl)oxy]pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid, a layer of Cu(II) ions that are deposited onto the SAM and bind symmetrically in the site provided by the two carboxylate groups and the pyridyl nitrogen atom, and a layer of cis-2,2'-dipyridylethylene, which caps the Cu(II) layer by complexation through both pyridyl nitrogen atoms (Film I). Photoexcitation of the film in chloroform at 300 nm leads to substantial cis-trans isomerization as indicated by conductivity, impedance, grazing incidence IR, and contact angle measurements. The latter show a decrease in contact angle (increase in wettability) of 17 degrees , which is attributed to exposure of both the underlying Cu(II) layer and one of the pyridyl ring nitrogen atoms following isomerization to the trans isomer.

Purpose: Sulfur mustard gas (SM) exposure to eyes causes multiple corneal injuries including stromal cell loss in vivo. However, mechanisms mediating stromal cell loss/death remains elusive. This study sought to test the novel hypothesis that SM-induced toxicity to human corneal stromal fibroblasts involves ferroptosis mechanism via p38 MAPK signaling.

Transition metal-nitrogen-carbon (MNC) based on 3d metal atoms as promising non-precious metal catalysts have been extensively exploited for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), but MNC with 4f rare earth metals have been largely ignored, most likely due to their large atomic radii that are difficult to coordinate with N dopants using conventional precursors. Herein, atomically dispersed dysprosium-nitrogen-carbon (DyNC) nanosheets were developed via the pyrolysis of anitrogen-containing chelate compound of 2, 4, 6-Tri (2-pyridyl) 1, 3, 5-triazine (TPTZ) ligand with Dy under the assistance of molten NaCl. The as-synthesized DyNC features specific moieties of single Dy atom coordinated by N and O as active sites for ORR, displaying excellent performance.

The asymmetric Schiff base prepared from ethylenediamine and pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde reacts with Fe(ClO)·6HO to form the Fe(II) complex [FeL](ClO) with L = ,-diethyl-'-(pyridin-2-yl)methylene)ethane-1,2-diamine, where the Fe(III) starting material has been unexpectedly reduced to Fe(II). This complex was characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectra, single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction measurements, variable temperature DC magnetic measurement and room temperature Mössbauer spectroscopy. The asymmetric ligand L coordinates in a tridentate fashion through its pyridyl, azomethine and amino nitrogen atoms, generating a distorted octahedral geometry around the central metal ion.

Gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) have been widely investigated because of their unique photoluminescence properties. However, the applications of AuNCs are limited by their poor stability and relatively low fluorescence. In the present work, we developed nanocomposites (L-Cys-AuNCs@ZIF-8) with high fluorescence and stability, which were constructed by encapsulating the water-dispersible L-Cys-AuNCs into a ZIF-8 via Zn-triggered growth strategy without high temperature and pressure.

Distortions in the porphyrin core from planarity can trigger a unique structure-property relationship, imparting its basicity, chemical stability, redox potential, and excited-state energetics, among other properties. The colour change promoted by such distortion is signed by red shifts in its electronic absorption spectra. The adsorption of guest -substituted free-base porphyrin species onto inorganic hosts, such as clay minerals (layered aluminium or magnesium silicates), is known to further promote colour changes.
