We report a case of pulseless electrical activity (PEA) associated with profound hypermagnesemia immediately after cementation of a novel magnesium-based cement in spine surgery. During T8 to T12 posterior instrumentation and decompression laminectomy for vertebral metastasis secondary to lung cancer, a 61-year-old Chinese woman developed sudden hypotension and went into PEA immediately after injection of a novel magnesium-based cement. Intraoperative fluoroscopic imaging did not show any notable cement extravasation.

Wastewater receives per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from diverse consumer and industrial sources, and discharges are known to be a concern for drinking water quality. The PFAS family includes thousands of potential chemical structures containing organofluorine moieties. Exposures to a few well-studied PFAS, mainly perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAA), have been associated with increased risk of many adverse health outcomes, prompting federal drinking water regulations for six compounds in 2024.

The MAPT gene encodes Tau protein, a member of the large family of microtubule-associated proteins. Tau forms large insoluble aggregates that are toxic to neurons in several neurological disorders, and neurofibrillary Tau tangles represent a key pathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other tauopathies. Lowering Tau expression levels constitutes a potential treatment for AD but the mechanisms that regulate Tau expression at the transcriptional or translational level are not well understood.

JAK1, a key regulator of multiple oncogenic pathways, is a sought-out target, and its expression in immune cells and tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) is associated with a favorable prognosis in breast cancer. JAK1 activates IL-6 via ERBB2 receptor tyrosine kinase signalling and promotes metastatic cancer and STAT3 activation in breast cancer cells. Hence, targeting JAK1 in breast cancer is being explored as a potential therapeutic strategy.
