Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) was used to quantify Photosystem I (PSI) and PSII in vesicles originating from a series of well-defined but different domains of the thylakoid membrane in spinach prepared by non-detergent techniques. Thylakoids from spinach were fragmented by sonication and separated by aqueous polymer two-phase partitioning into vesicles originating from grana and stroma lamellae. The grana vesicles were further sonicated and separated into two vesicle preparations originating from the grana margins and the appressed domains of grana (the grana core), respectively. PSI and PSII were determined in the same samples from the maximal size of the EPR signal from P700(+) and Y(D)( .-), respectively. The following PSI/PSII ratios were found: thylakoids, 1.13; grana vesicles, 0.43; grana core, 0.25; grana margins, 1.28; stroma lamellae 3.10. In a sub-fraction of the stroma lamellae, denoted Y-100, PSI was highly enriched and the PSI/PSII ratio was 13. The antenna size of the respective photosystems was calculated from the experimental data and the assumption that a PSII center in the stroma lamellae (PSIIbeta) has an antenna size of 100 Chl. This gave the following results: PSI in grana margins (PSIalpha) 300, PSI (PSIbeta) in stroma lamellae 214, PSII in grana core (PSIIalpha) 280. The results suggest that PSI in grana margins have two additional light-harvesting complex II (LHCII) trimers per reaction center compared to PSI in stroma lamellae, and that PSII in grana has four LHCII trimers per monomer compared to PSII in stroma lamellae. Calculation of the total chlorophyll associated with PSI and PSII, respectively, suggests that more chlorophyll (about 10%) is associated with PSI than with PSII.

We have compared the biomechanical properties of human and porcine corneas using vibrational optical coherence tomography (VOCT). The elastic modulus of the cornea has been previously reported in the literature to vary from about several kPa to more than several GPa based on the results of different techniques. In addition, the formation of corneal cones near the central cornea in keratoconus has been observed in the clinic.

The cornea is the transparent part of the eye's outer sheath and the primary refractive element in the optical system of all vertebrates allowing light to focus on the central part of the retina. Maintenance of its curvature and clarity is therefore essential, providing a smooth optical surface and a protective goggle to ensure a focused image on the retina. However, the corneas of birds have been largely overlooked and the structures and mechanisms controlling corneal shape and hence visual acuity remain unknown.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the various surgical approaches to manage stromal interface irregularity following deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK).
Methods: This interventional case series included patients requiring repeat keratoplasty procedures for stromal interface opacity and/or irregularity following DALK. The following surgical techniques with the aim of restoring transparency and regularity of the central optical zone and improving visual acuity in eyes that underwent unsuccessful DALK were performed: 1) simple anterior lamellar graft exchange, 2) repeat DALK with pneumatic dissection, 3) repeat DALK with deepening of manual lamellar dissection, 4) small diameter stripping of the central stroma-endothelium-Descemet complex and its replacement with a new endothelial lamella, and 5) 2-piece microkeratome-assisted mushroom penetrating keratoplasty.

Knowledge of photosystem II (PSII) response mechanisms underlying crop vulnerability to drought is critical to better understanding the consequences of climate change on crop plants. A comprehensive light and ultrastructural examination of the cornea in Domestic Pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) revealed four distinct layers: the anterior epithelium, corneal stroma, Descemet's membrane and endothelium. Although Bowman's layer was not distinctly identified through histology, histochemical analysis indicated the presence of a rudimentary Bowman's layer, possibly vestigial from evolution. Scanning electron microscopy of the outer corneal surface unveiled two cell types, characterized by micro-projections, with light cells exhibiting shorter, thicker projections compared to dark cells.
