Published: January 2004

In recent decades, the management of difficult wounds has been enhanced by the introduction of amorphous hydrogels. This paper examines reports in the literature on the outcomes of studies into the efficacy of this group of dressings, discusses the types of wounds that are most suitable for hydrogel application and poses questions that merit further investigation.

Radiotherapy (RT) is widely applied in tumor therapy, but inevitable side effects, especially for skin radiation injury, are still a fatal problem and life-threatening challenge for tumor patients. The main components of topical radiation protection preparations currently available on the market are antioxidants, such as SOD, which are limited by their unstable activity and short duration of action, making it difficult to achieve the effects of radiation protection and skin radiation damage treatment. Therefore, we designed a drug-free antioxidant hydrogel patch with encapsulated bioactive epidermal growth factor (EGF) for the treatment of radiation skin injury.

Electronic address:

Bacterial-infected wounds usually lead to slow wound healing due to increased inflammation, especially wounds infected by drug-resistant bacteria, which is a serious challenge in the biomedical field. Traditional antimicrobial strategies such as antibiotics lead to a significant increase in drug-resistant strains and have limited efficacy. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop multifunctional dressings with excellent antibacterial activity and promotion of wound healing.

Bacterial infections impede skin wound healing, and antibacterial hydrogels have garnered significant attention in the field of wound care due to their combined therapeutic effects. In this study, an intelligent, responsive AC-Gel@Cur-Au hydrogel was developed using temperature-sensitive agarose and pH-responsive chitosan as the structural framework, infused with Gel@Cur and AuNR. The AC-Gel@Cur-Au hydrogels demonstrated excellent mechanical properties, swelling capacity, tissue adhesion, and biodegradability.

The prevalence of nanoplastics in water has led to significant environmental and health concerns, yet effective and scalable strategies for mitigating this contamination remain limited. Here, we report a straightforward, efficient, and scalable approach to degrade nanoplastics in water using enzyme-loaded hydrogel granules with an interconnected porous structure and adjustable properties. These porous hydrogels were synthesized via a polymerization-induced phase separation method, allowing easy scaling-up.

Youthful Stem Cell Microenvironments: Rejuvenating Aged Bone Repair Through Mitochondrial Homeostasis Remodeling.

Extracellular matrix (ECM) derived from mesenchymal stem cells regulates antioxidant properties and bone metabolism by providing a favorable extracellular microenvironment. However, its functional role and molecular mechanism in mitochondrial function regulation and aged bone regeneration remain insufficiently elucidated. This proteomic analysis has revealed a greater abundance of proteins supporting mitochondrial function in the young ECM (Y-ECM) secreted by young bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) compared to the aged ECM (A-ECM).
