Macrophagic myofasciitis is a recently identified inflammatory myopathy mostly described in adult French patients complaining of arthro-myalgias and fatigue. It is probably due to intramuscular injection of aluminium-containing vaccines and is characterized by a typical muscular infiltrate of large macrophages with aluminium inclusions. We report a 1-year-old Italian child presenting irritability, delayed motor development, hyperCKemia (up to 10 times the normal value), and typical features of macrophagic myofasciitis on muscle biopsy. The child recovered fully after steroid therapy. Macrophagic myofasciitis is a new treatable cause of motor retardation and hyperCKemia in children, and is probably more common than reported. Diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion and can be missed if biopsy is performed outside the vaccination site.

(1) Background: Macrophagic myofasciitis (MMF) is an inflammatory histopathological lesion demonstrating long-term biopersistence of vaccine-derived aluminum adjuvants within muscular phagocytic cells. Affected patients suffer from widespread myalgia and severe fatigue consistent with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), a poorly understood disorder suspected to result from chronic immune stimulation by infectious and inorganic particles. (2) Methods: In this study we determined the immuno-metabolic properties of MMF phagocytic cells compared to controls, at rest and upon exposure to aluminum oxyhydroxide adjuvant, with or without adsorbed antigens, using protein quantification and an oxygen consumption assay.

Cervical cancer is caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, which is preventable by HPV vaccines. In Japan, the HPV vaccination rate has remained extremely low due to the concerns for alleged neuropsychological symptoms or "diverse symptoms" following injections of two HPV vaccines, Cervarix and Gardasil, in HPV vaccine lawsuits. In the lawsuits, the attorneys' group has used several manuscripts proposing that aluminum (Al) adjuvant contained in HPV vaccines causes an immune-mediated disease, called macrophagic myofasciitis (MMF), as well as pathology in the central nervous system (CNS).
