Poplar (Populus tremula x alba) trees (clone INRA 717-1-B4) were cultivated for 1 month in phytotronic chambers with two different levels of ozone (60 and 120 nL L(-1)). Foliar activities of shikimate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.25), phenylalanine ammonia lyase (EC 4.3.1.5), and cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD, EC 1.1.1.195) were compared with control levels. In addition, we examined lignin content and structure in control and ozone-fumigated leaves. Under ozone exposure, CAD activity and CAD RNA levels were found to be rapidly and strongly increased whatever the foliar developmental stage. In contrast, shikimate dehydrogenase and phenylalanine ammonia lyase activities were increased in old and midaged leaves but not in the youngest ones. The increased activities of these enzymes involved in the late or early steps of the metabolic pathway leading to lignins were associated with a higher Klason lignin content in extract-free leaves. In addition, stress lignins synthesized in response to ozone displayed a distinct structure, relative to constitutive lignins. They were found substantially enriched in carbon-carbon interunit bonds and in p-hydroxyphenylpropane units, which is reminiscent of lignins formed at early developmental stages, in compression wood, or in response to fungal elicitor. The highest changes in lignification and in enzyme activities were obtained with the highest ozone dose (120 nL L(-1)). These results suggest that ozone-induced lignins might contribute to the poplar tolerance to ozone because of their barrier or antioxidant effect toward reactive oxygen species.

Background: Improving the compatibility between polylactic acid (PLA) and lignin is crucial for developing innovative PLA-based controlled release systems for pesticides. This study addresses the challenge of enhancing the compatibility of alkali lignin (AL) with PLA by acetylated lignin (ACL). The main aim is to synthesize and evaluate pesticide-loaded microspheres for controlled release performance using fluazinam (FZ) as the model pesticide.

A nitrogen-coordinated Fe single-atom catalyst (SA Fe-N/C) is synthesized using a homogeneous ethanol-based dissolution system with bamboo kraft lignin serving as the carbon source. Uniformly dispersed Fe atoms with an interatomic distance of less than 2 Å throughout the SA Fe-N/C structure are revealed through X-ray absorption spectral analysis and HAADF-STEM images, which possessed a high Fe loading of 2.69%.

The incorporation of ZIF-67 into hydrogels for wastewater pollutant remediation has been widely studied, but the synthesis often requires organic solvents such as methanol or ethanol, which can result in the generation of toxic liquid waste. In this study, a novel hydrogel (ZIF-67@SL) was synthesized by integrating ZIF-67 into a dual-network system of sodium lignosulfonate (SL) and acrylamide (AM) using an in situ precipitation method in water. The material was characterized by XRD, FTIR, XPS, SEM, TEM, BET, and TGA analyses.

In this study, polyethylene glycol 200 (PEG200) was employed as hydrogen bond acceptor, while organic acids served as hydrogen bond donors, to formulate poly-deep eutectic solvents (PDESs), which were utilized to pretreat tea stem. Specially, combining PEG200 and oxalic acid (OA) exhibited a notably high cellulose retention (82.03 %) and most efficient hemicellulose (97.

Ultra-precision point-of-care detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in foods is an important issue. Here, the detection sensitivity was improved by a signal cascade amplification strategy synergised by exonuclease III assisted isothermal amplification and reverse magnetic strategy. The double-stranded DNA formed by the aptamer and the target DNA as a sensing switch, avoiding the complex process of specific nucleic acid extraction.
