We evaluated four commercially available kits for rapid identification of Actinomyces and related species. The kits identified correctly 26 to 65% of "classical" Actinomyces strains to the species level and 13 to 49% of newly described Actinomyces strains to the genus level, thus indicating relatively poor applicability and a need to update these kits.

Lemierre Syndrome, septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein following oropharyngeal infection, is classically caused by and associated with septic emboli. We present a case of Lemierre Syndrome involving (formerly ) in the setting of injection drug use. A 46-year-old man presented with right neck swelling and abscess with as the primary bacterium isolated from the abscess culture, which was introduced to the site when the patient had licked his needle and injected illicit drugs into his neck.

Unlabelled: The dental plaque is a polymicrobial community where biofilm formation and co-aggregation, the ability to bind to other bacteria, play a major role in the construction of an organized consortium. One of its prominent members is the anaerobic diderm considered a bridging species, which growth depends on lactate produced by oral streptococci. Understanding how co-aggregates and the impact of aggregation has long been hampered due to the lack of appropriate genetic tools.

: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) ranks sixth among cancers in the world, and the 5-year survival rate ranges from 25% to 60%. The risk factors for HNSCC are primarily smoking, alcohol consumption and human papillomavirus (HPV). Data indicate that 15-20% of cancers are caused by infectious agents, 20-30% by smoking and 30-35% by unhealthy lifestyles, diet, lack of physical activity and obesity.

Background: are mucous membrane commensals that infrequently cause invasive disease. Our goal was to define species prevalence, the predominant disease site and risk factors for actinomycosis.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed patients with growth of species from cultures in a single-cancer center from July 2007 to June 2020.
