The inability to cryobiologically preserve the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster has required that fly stocks be maintained by frequent transfer of adults. This method is costly in terms of time and can lead to loss of stocks. Traditional slow freezing methods do not succeed because the embryos are highly sensitive to chilling. With the procedures described here, 68 percent of precisely staged 15-hour Oregon R (wild-type) embryos hatch after vitrification at -205 degrees C, and 40 percent of the resulting larvae develop into normal adult flies. These embryos are among the most complex organisms successfully preserved by cryobiology.

H9c2 myoblasts are a cell line derived from embryonic rat heart tissue and demonstrate the ability to differentiate to cardiac myotubes upon reduction of the serum concentration (from 10% to 1%) and addition of all-trans retinoic acid in the growth medium. H9c2 cells are increasingly being used as an easy-to-culture proxy for some functions of cardiomyocytes. The cryobiology of cardiac cells including H9c2 myoblasts has not been studied as extensively as that of some cell types.

Human red blood cells (RBC) exposed to hypertonic media are subject to post-hypertonic lysis - an injury that only develops during resuspension to an isotonic medium. The nature of post-hypertonic lysis was previously hypothesized to be osmotic when cation leaks were observed, and salt loading was suggested as a cause of the cell swelling upon resuspension in an isotonic medium. However, it was problematic to account for the salt loading since the plasma membrane of human RBCs was considered impermeable to cations.
