Background: The tasks and responsibilities that come with clinician involvement in medicolegal proceedings can be daunting and particularly so in challenging areas such as provision of medicolegal opinions in cases involving disorders of consciousness (DoC).

Objective: The aim of this narrative review was to provide education and advice to healthcare practitioners who by choice or circumstance are asked and/or required to provide medicolegal opinions in cases involving patients with DoC.

Methods: A literature search was conducted using PubMed Central and MedlinePlus for articles dealing with clinician involvement in medicolegal cases involving persons with DoC.

No one solution to the "new demarcation problem"?: A view from the trenches.

Stud Hist Philos Sci

April 2022

Richard Dale Endowed Chair, University of Texas School of Law, 727 E. Dean Keeton Street, Austin, TX 78705, USA. Electronic address:

The new demarcation problem asks whether and how we can identify illegitimate values in scientific inquiry. Yet given the multiple contexts and audiences of science advice occurring in practice, a single strategy or set of ex ante criteria may not be the best way to approach this difficult puzzle. This paper offers a mapping of several distinct types of manifestations of the new demarcation problem arising in environmental and health policymaking over the last fifty years and notes their highly divergent features with respect to assessing the illegitimacy of the values in scientific work.

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has affected practically every aspect of life across the globe for the past year or more; the practice of clinical research not the least. Clinician scientists attempting to start or continue work both related and unrelated to the disease itself have faced ethical, oversight, or regulatory challenges. No aspect of the clinical trial enterprise was unaffected.

In lieu of comprehensive instrumental seismic monitoring, short historical records, and limited fault trench investigations for many seismically active areas, the sedimentary record provides important archives of seismicity in the form of preserved horizons of soft-sediment deformation features, termed seismites. Here we report on extensive seismites in the Late Quaternary-Recent (≤ ~ 28,000 years BP) alluvial and lacustrine strata of the Rukwa Rift Basin, a segment of the Western Branch of the East African Rift System. We document examples of the most highly deformed sediments in shallow, subsurface strata close to the regional capital of Mbeya, Tanzania.

In the trenches: lessons for scientists from California's Proposition 71 campaign.

Mol Biol Cell

November 2011

Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, School of Medicine, and UCSD Stem Cell Program, University of California, San Diego, La Jolla, CA 92093, USA.

I describe a number of valuable lessons I learned from participating in California's Proposition 71 effort about the role that scientists and rigorous scientific advice can play in a public political process. I describe how scientists can provide valuable information and advice and how they can also gain a great deal from the experience that is valuable to a practicing research scientist. Finally, I argue that in the future, building similar broad coalitions to support biomedical and other areas of scientific research will be essential to protect publicly funded science.
