PCSK9 in metabolism and diseases.

Metabolism

February 2025

Shanghai Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Department of Cardiology, Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai 200032, China; National Clinical Research Center for Interventional Medicine, Shanghai 200032, China. Electronic address:

PCSK9 is a serine protease that regulates plasma levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and cholesterol by mediating the endolysosomal degradation of LDL receptor (LDLR) in the liver. When PCSK9 functions unchecked, it leads to increased degradation of LDLR, resulting in elevated circulatory levels of LDL and cholesterol. This dysregulation contributes to lipid and cholesterol metabolism abnormalities, foam cell formation, and the development of various diseases, including cardiovascular disease (CVD), viral infections, cancer, and sepsis.

Juvenile hormone as a key regulator for asymmetric caste differentiation in ants.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

November 2024

Centre for Evolutionary and Organismal Biology, Women's Hospital, & Liangzhu Laboratory, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310058, China.

Caste differentiation involves many functional traits that diverge during larval growth and metamorphosis to produce adults irreversibly adapted to reproductive division of labor. Investigating developmental differentiation is important for general biological understanding and has increasingly been explored for social phenotypes that diverge in parallel from similar genotypes. Here, we use ants to investigate the extent to which canalized worker development can be shifted toward gyne (virgin-queen) phenotypes by juvenile hormone (JH) treatment.

Avian-inspired embodied perception in biohybrid flapping-wing robotics.

Nat Commun

October 2024

State Key Laboratory of Ocean Engineering, Department of Engineering Mechanics, School of Ocean and Civil Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China.

Avian feather intricate adaptable architecture to wing deformations has catalyzed interest in feathered flapping-wing aircraft with high maneuverability, agility, and stealth. Yet, to mimic avian integrated somatic sensation within stringent weight constraints, remains challenging. Here, we propose an avian-inspired embodied perception approach for biohybrid flapping-wing robots.

Clonal landscape of autoantibody-secreting plasmablasts in COVID-19 patients.

Life Sci Alliance

December 2024

Laboratory of Human Immunology (Single Cell Genomics), Immunology Frontier Research Center, Osaka University, Osaka, Japan.

Whereas severe COVID-19 is often associated with elevated autoantibody titers, the underlying mechanism behind their generation has remained unclear. Here we report clonal composition and diversity of autoantibodies in humoral response to SARS-CoV-2. Immunoglobulin repertoire analysis and characterization of plasmablast-derived monoclonal antibodies uncovered clonal expansion of plasmablasts producing cardiolipin (CL)-reactive autoantibodies.
