The primary electron donor of photosystem (PS) II in the chlorophyll (Chl) d-dominated cyanobacterium Acaryochloris marina was confirmed by delayed fluorescence (DF) and further proved by pigment contents of cells grown under several light intensities. The DF was found only in the Chl a region, identical to Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, and disappeared following heat treatment. Pigment analyses indicated that at least two Chl a molecules were present per each two pheophytin a molecules, and these Chl a molecules are assigned to P(D1) and P(D2). These findings clearly indicate that Chl a is required for water oxidation in PS II.

The femtosecond dynamics of energy transfer from light-excited spirilloxanthin (Spx) to bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) a in the reaction centers (RCs) of purple photosynthetic bacteria Rhodospirillum rubrum was studied. According to crio-electron microscopy data, Spx is located near accessory BChl a in the B-branch of cofactors. Spx was excited by 25 fs laser pulses at 490 nm, and difference absorption spectra were recorded in the range 500-700 nm.

Inelastic photoelectron scattering (IPES) by gas molecules, a critical phenomenon observed in ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS), complicates spectral interpretation due to kinetic energy loss in the primary spectrum and the appearance of additional features at higher binding energies. In this study, we systematically investigate IPES in various gas environments using APXPS, providing detailed insights into interactions between photoelectrons emitted from solid surfaces and surrounding gas molecules. Core-level XPS spectra of Au, Ag, Zn, and Cu metals were recorded over a wide kinetic energy range in the presence of CO, N, Ar, and H gases, demonstrating the universal nature of IPES across different systems.
