Department of Health Promotion and Behavior, University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia, USA.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify and test the factor structure of the Agricultural Producer Barriers to Care Scale (APBCS), which assesses barriers to engaging with health care in rural US farmers.

Methods: Respondents (n = 1045) completed an online survey that was distributed digitally and in-person by researchers and community partners at farming events and via farm-related social media. Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis were used to assess the underlying factor structure of the APBCS, and McDonald's omega coefficients were calculated to test the reliability of each factor and the instrument as a whole.

Unlabelled: Far removed from the agricultural fire "hotspots" of Northwestern India, rice residue burning is on the rise in Eastern India with implications for regional air quality and agricultural sustainability. The underlying drivers contributing to the increase in burning have been linked to the adoption of mechanized (combine) harvesting but, in general, are inadequately understood. We hypothesize that the adoption of burning as a management practice results from a set of socio-technical interactions rather than emerging from a single factor.

In countries with pasture-based dairy systems and relatively cold winters, such as New Zealand, it is common to manage pregnant, nonlactating cows on forage crop paddocks rather than pasture, due to slow pasture growth rates. Wintering dairy cattle on grazed crops can compromise welfare if wet and muddy underfoot conditions occur, which can reduce lying. This study investigated behavioral and physiological indicators of welfare of cows under 2 wintering practices: cows managed on and grazed kale crop (Brassica oleracea), and cows managed on pasture with baled hay.

Infectious disease events can cause disruptions in service-based and agricultural industries. The list of possible events is long and varies from the incursion or emergence of a reportable animal pathogen to the recently documented interruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a need to develop models that can determine the impact of pathogens and mitigation measures on populations that are not directly affected by the pathogen in the case of a reportable disease, particularly when the health and welfare of these populations could be affected due to resulting disruptions in trade and supply chains.

Article Synopsis
  • Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is linked to ovarian reserve, with maternal and environmental factors influencing its levels during early fetal development in dairy heifers.
  • This study aimed to investigate if maternal growth before conception and early gestation affects AMH concentrations in female offspring, with a hypothesis that excessive growth would lead to lower AMH levels.
  • Results indicated that increasing maternal growth linked to an initial pregnancy diagnosis correlated with reduced AMH in calves, though this accounted for only a small portion of variability in AMH levels.
