The aim of study was to correlate the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cell subpopulations in light microscopy and clinical-functional parameters in 20 children with chronic nonproductive cough (potentially evolving to asthma) in comparison with 20 children with mild and moderate stable asthma. The results revealed a different BAL cell profile of chronic coughing children, characterized by a lower percent of total cells (0.279 +/- 0.055 x 10(6)/ml), eosinophils (0.97 +/- 0.80%), lymphocytes (6.02 +/- 0.85%) and epithelial cells (28.52 +/- 5.15%) and higher percent of macrophages (46.05 +/- 7.94%) and neutrophils (18.27 +/- 4.93%). Eosinophilic inflammation in BAL and bronchial hyper-responsiveness (PC20 methacholine = 1.73 +/- 0.15 mg/ml) were revealed in three cases with chronic cough. Based on these reasons, they were included in "cough variant asthma". In conclusion, children with nonproductive chronic cough represent a heterogenous group, with different underlying causes. Only a minority of these patients has "cough variant asthma", with a favorable response to inhaled corticotherapy.

Background: Developing interventions along with the population of interest using systems thinking is a promising method to address the underlying system dynamics of overweight. The purpose of this study is twofold: to gain insight into the perspectives of adolescents regarding: (1) the system dynamics of energy balance-related behaviours (EBRBs) (physical activity, screen use, sleep behaviour and dietary behaviour); and (2) underlying mechanisms and overarching drivers of unhealthy EBRBs.
Methods: We conducted Participatory Action Research (PAR) to map the system dynamics of EBRBs together with adolescents aged 10-14 years old living in a lower socioeconomic, ethnically diverse neighbourhood in Amsterdam East, the Netherlands.

Objectives: Brachial artery injury due to displaced supracondylar fracture (SC) of the humerus in children may present with pink pulseless hand (PPH), denoting a well perfused hand without radial pulse, or acute hand ischemia. Some reports state that brachial artery reconstruction is not necessary in children with persisting PPH, but the reports on long-term consequences such as intermittent claudications, growth retardation and ischemic contracture in children with pulseless hand are scarce and often misinterpreted. The objective of our analysis was to assess the long-term outcomes of children with brachial artery injury associated with SC fracture.

Lung tissue from human patients and murine models of sickle cell disease pulmonary hypertension (SCD-PH) show perivascular regions with excessive iron accumulation. The iron accumulation arises from chronic hemolysis and extravasation of hemoglobin (Hb) into the lung adventitial spaces, where it is linked to nitric oxide depletion, oxidative stress, inflammation, and tissue hypoxia, which collectively drive SCD-PH. Here, we tested the hypothesis that intrapulmonary delivery of hemopexin (Hpx) to the deep lung is effective at scavenging heme-iron and attenuating the progression of SCD-PH.

The chronic myeloid leukemia is a malignant hematopoietic disorder in which the BCR-ABL kinase has been identified as the causative protein. The inhibitors targeting BCR-ABL kinase have been extensively employed in clinical management of chronic myeloid leukemia, significantly enhancing survival rates and prognosis for patients. Despite the extensive utilization of 1st to 4th generation BCR-ABL inhibitors in clinical therapy, the emergence of drug-resistant mutations necessitates an urgent quest for novel therapeutic strategies.
