We examined neuronal and oligodendroglial nuclear inclusions and neurites in the pontine base of multiple system atrophy brains using an antibody to alpha-synuclein. Immunohistochemistry showed alpha-synuclein positive inclusions in the nuclei of some neurons and oligodendroglia. Immunoelectron microscopy showed that the labeled inclusions were composed of bundles of tightly packed straight filaments with a diameter of 10-20 nm. The filaments were similar, if not identical, in morphology and immunoreactivity, to those found in the soma of neurons and oligodendrocytes with glial cytoplasmic inclusions. In addition, similar immuno-positive filaments were found in dendrites or unmyelinated axons, but not in myelinated axons. The functional significance of these inclusions in terms of transcriptional and axonal dysfunction is unknown.

Huntington's disease (HD) is caused by the expansion of a CAG repeat, encoding a string of glutamines (polyQ) in the first exon of the huntingtin gene (HTTex1). This mutant huntingtin protein (mHTT) with extended polyQ forms aggregates in cortical and striatal neurons, causing cell damage and death. The retina is part of the central nervous system (CNS), and visual deficits and structural abnormalities in the retina of HD patients have been observed.

We identified a novel herpesvirus in 2 deceased captive blue penguins (). Moderate-to-severe myocardiocyte atrophy and necrosis, and eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies (INIBs), were seen in myocardiocytes in one bird; reticuloendothelial (RE) cell INIBs and multifocal RE cell necrosis were seen in both birds. The histologic findings were suggestive of viral infection.

Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) is a rare progressive neurodegenerative disease with a characteristic pathological feature of eosinophilic hyaluronan inclusions in the nervous system and internal organs. The identification of GGC-repeat expansions in the Notch 2 N-terminal like C (NOTCH2NLC) gene facilitates the accurate diagnosis of NIID. Due to its rareness and high clinical heterogeneity, the diagnosis of NIID is often delayed or missed.

Background: Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox), a zoonotic disease caused by Monkeypox virus (MPXV), has become an international outbreak since May 2022. Mpox often presents with a mild systemic illness and a characteristic vesiculopustular skin eruption. In addition to molecular testing, histopathology of cutaneous lesions usually shows distinctive findings, such as epidermal necrosis, balloon degeneration, papillary dermal edema, and focal dermal necrosis, which have proven helpful in the diagnosis of mpox.

The misfolding and aggregation of TAR DNA binding protein-43 (TDP-43), leading to the formation of cytoplasmic inclusions, emerge as a key pathological feature in a spectrum of neurodegenerative diseases, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal lobar dementia (FTLD). TDP-43 shuttles between the nucleus and cytoplasm but forms nuclear bodies (NBs) in response to stress. These NBs partially colocalise with nuclear speckles and paraspeckles that sequester RNAs and proteins, thereby regulating many cellular functions.
