A 35 kD protein was isolated and purified from conditioned media of Bcl-2 cDNA-transfected PC12 cells and its cDNA cloned. A database analysis showed that the 35 kD protein is a rat homologue of the human FLRG protein. The biochemical as well as morphological properties of the rat FLRG protein in PC12 cells were examined and its distribution in rat tissues determined. The levels of FLRG mRNA expressed were low during the fetal period, compared with those of follistatin mRNA. The distribution of FLRG and follistatin mRNAs differed from each other after birth; the expression levels of FLRG mRNA were abundant in the adrenal gland and testis, whereas those of follistatin mRNA and activin A were markedly high in the ovary. The presence of FLRG mRNA and/or protein was confirmed in spermatocytes at various differentiating stages andin endocrine cells of both the adrenal cortex and medulla. When overexpressed in PC12 cells, the FLRG protein was found to be stored in secretory granules of the cells and largely secreted by a regulated pathway, while activin A enhancedthe constitutive secretion of the FLRG protein from wild-typpe PC12 cells, indicating that the FLRG protein possesses dualproperties in secretory pathways. The different distribution between FLRG and follistatin mRNA suggests that, like follistatin in the ovary, the FLRG protein may be involved in the maintenance of spermatogenesis in the testis and the growth and function of adrenal tissue cells, probably by regulating the functions of its binding partners such as the TGF-beta ( superfamily members.

FSTL1 aggravates high glucose-induced oxidative stress and transdifferentiation in HK-2 cells.

Chronic hyperglycemia, a hallmark of diabetes, can trigger inflammatory responses in the kidney, leading to diabetic nephropathy (DN). Follistatin-like protein 1 (FSTL1) has emerged as a potential therapeutic target in various kidney diseases. This study investigated the effect of high glucose on FSTL1 expression and its role in oxidative stress and cellular transdifferentiation injury in HK-2 human proximal tubule epithelial cells, a model of DN.

Obesity is a highly prevalent disorder with complex aetiology. Therefore, studying its associated cellular and molecular pathways may be aided by analysing genetic tractable diseases. In this context, the study of ciliopathies such as Bardet-Biedl syndrome has highlighted the relevance of primary cilia in obesity, both in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute aortic dissection (AAD) is a serious cardiovascular emergency linked to changes in vascular smooth muscle cells and the breakdown of the extracellular matrix, with Follistatin-like 1 (FSTL1) found to play a protective role in related cardiovascular issues.
  • The study showed that FSTL1 levels were significantly lower in both human and mouse AAD models, and adding FSTL1 back helped improve VSMC function and reduce damage in the aorta.
  • Mechanistically, the research revealed that FSTL1 can enhance the phosphorylation of AMPK, suggesting that targeting FSTL1 could be a novel approach for preventing and treating AAD.

This study aims to evaluate systemic immune inflammation index, systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI), aggregate index of systemic inflammation (AISI), and follistatin-like protein-1 (FSTL-1) levels in children with pneumonia and healthy controls. The study was carried out at the Seydisehir State Hospital between February 1, 2024 and June 1, 2024. The patient group included 44 children diagnosed with pneumonia and the control group included 45 healthy children without any disease.

Tumors of the digestive system are one of the most important factors affecting people's quality of life and have become a serious public health problem globally.Early screening and intervention of tumor markers in high-risk groups for tumors is the key to tumor prevention. Follistatin-related proteins (FRP) are important members of the follistatin family and such proteins are involved in the pathological process of tumors of the reproductive system and respiratory system, among others.
