AEDES ALBOPICTUS IN-HOUSE WINTER BREEDING IN GERMANY-A CASE STUDY.

J Am Mosq Control Assoc

December 2024

Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut, Federal Research Institute for Animal Health, Greifswald, Germany.

In February 2024, a resident of Mannheim, Germany, collected aggressively attacking mosquitoes in her home and forwarded them to the "Mueckenatlas" citizen science recording scheme. The specimens turned out to be Aedes albopictus. Upon discussing the situation and consultation on the biology of the Asian tiger mosquito, the submitter found numerous developmental stages in the water of a flowerpot with an orchid in her living room.

Pathogens of the enterovirus genus, including poliovirus and coxsackieviruses, typically circulate in the summer months suggesting a possible positive association between warmer weather and transmission. Here we evaluate the environmental and demographic drivers of enterovirus transmission, as well as the implications of climate change for future enterovirus circulation. We leverage pre-vaccination era data on polio in the US as well as data on two enterovirus A serotypes in China and Japan that are known to cause hand, foot, and mouth disease.

In Japan, stocked chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) fry may have become the perfect prey for non-native brown trout (Salmo trutta), which are popular targets of anglers. If this is the case, fry stocking which is intended to boost commercial fishing may be helping to sustain the populations of an invasive predator. We used dietary and biochemical analyses to examine whether brown trout quickly restore their nutritional status following wintertime declines by preying upon chum salmon fry that are stocked in spring.

Connectivity of floodplain influences riverine carbon outgassing and dissolved carbon transport.

Sci Total Environ

May 2024

School of Renewable Natural Resources, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA 70803, USA.

Rivers not only function as a conduit for the delivery of terrestrial constituents to oceans, but they also serve as an essential medium for biogeochemical processing of the constituents. While extensive research has been conducted on carbon transport in many rivers, little is known about carbon transformation in engineered rivers reconnected with their floodplain network. Being the largest distributary of the levee-confined Mississippi River (MR), the Atchafalaya River (AR) carries 25 % of the MR water, flowing through North America's largest freshwater swamp basin and emptying into the Gulf of Mexico.
