Sympathetic dysfunction and skin microvascular arteriovenous shunting with insufficient nutritive perfusion and tissue hypoxia have been reported in patients with erythromelalgia. The objective of this study was to determine whether iloprost, a synthetic prostacyclin analogue--primarily a vasodilator and inhibitor of platelet activation--improves symptoms and sympathetic function in patients with erythromelalgia. Erythromelalgia is a rare condition, but we managed to collect 12 primary cases for a double-blind, randomized, parallel-group pilot trial evaluating the effect of iloprost (n = 8) and placebo (n = 4). The treatment effect was determined by the need for cooling of affected skin and by vasoconstrictor tests following Valsalva's manoeuvre and contralateral cooling. The results show a significant reduction in symptoms (p < 0.05) and sympathetic dysfunction (p < 0.05) in the iloprost group. Further studies with oral prostacyclins or analogues are suggested.

Intraocular pressure (IOP) plays a crucial role in glaucoma development, involving the dynamics of aqueous humor (AH). AH flows in from the ciliary body and exits through the trabecular meshwork (TM). IOP follows a circadian rhythm synchronized with the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), the circadian pacemaker.

Background: Exposure to cold environments is linked to cold-induced hypertension due to activated sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) and arterial baroreceptor reflex dysfunction. However, direct measurement of SNA during cold-induced hypertension and changes in baroreflex control of SNA remain unexplored.
Methods: Chronically instrumented rats were exposed to cold temperatures (10 °C) over 4 days after a control period (24 °C), and renal and lumbar sympathetic nerve activities were simultaneously measured during cold-induced hypertension.
Renewed scientific interest in sympathetic modulation of muscle and neuromuscular junctions has spurred a flurry of new discoveries with major implications for motor diseases. However, the role sympathetic axons play in the persistent dysfunction that occurs after nerve injuries remains to be explored. Peripheral nerve injuries are common and lead to motor, sensory, and autonomic deficits that result in lifelong disabilities.

Background: Lowering barometric pressure (LP) can exacerbate neuropathic pain. However, animal studies in this field are limited to a few conditions. Furthermore, although sympathetic involvement has been reported as a possible mechanism, whether the sympathetic nervous system is involved in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis remains unknown.

Background: Presentations and outcomes of acute myocardial infarction (MI) differ between women and men, with the worst outcomes being reported in younger women. Mental stress induced ischemia and sympathetic activation have been suggested to play a prominent role in the pathogenesis of MI in younger women, however, the impact of sex hormones on these parameters remains unknown.
Methods: The effect of sex hormones and age on myocardial infarct size and myocardial sympathetic activity (MSA) was assessed in male and female, as well as young (4-6 months) and aged (20-22 months) FVB/N mice (n = 106, 60 gonadectomized and 46 sham-operated animals) who underwent in vivo [C]meta-hydroxyephedrine ([C]mHED) positron emission tomography (PET) and cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging 24 h after a 30 min myocardial ischemic injury.
