Corrinoids are cobalt-containing tetrapyrroles. They include adenosylcobalamin (vitamin B) and cobamides that function as cofactors and coenzymes for methyl transfer, radical-dependent and redox reactions. Though cobamides are the most complex cofactors in nature, they are essential in the acetyl-CoA pathway, thought to be the most ancient CO-fixation pathway, where they perform a pterin-to-cobalt-to-nickel methyl transfer reaction catalyzed by the corrinoid iron-sulphur protein (CoFeS).

Skin-associated shares cobamides.

Unlabelled: The underlying interactions that occur to maintain skin microbiome composition, function, and overall skin health are largely unknown. Often, these types of interactions are mediated by microbial metabolites. Cobamides, the vitamin B family of cofactors, are essential for metabolism in many bacteria but are only synthesized by a fraction of prokaryotes, including certain skin-associated species.

Article Synopsis
  • - Cyanide (CN) is a toxic compound that affects mitochondrial function, leading to potential poisoning from both short-term and long-term exposure to various CN compounds.
  • - Recent research has improved understanding of how CN interacts with copper and iron in mitochondria, disrupting the electron transport chain and causing toxic effects.
  • - Antidotes work by targeting CN's affinity for metal-containing substances, and further studies on its interactions with metalloproteins could enhance treatment methods for CN poisoning.

Cobamides (Cbas) are cobalt-containing cyclic tetrapyrroles used by cells from all domains of life as co-catalyst of diverse reactions. There are several structural features that distinguish Cbas from one another. The most relevant of those features discussed in this review is the lower ligand, which is the nucleobase of a ribotide located in the lower face of the cyclic tetrapyrrole ring.

Article Synopsis
  • - Green hydrogen is a promising clean energy source derived from water, efficiently storing electrical energy from renewable sources like wind and solar, but direct production from neutral water is difficult due to low proton concentration.
  • - Researchers developed three new molecular electrodes using cobalt-based electrocatalysts with different ligands (porphyrin, phthalocyanine, and corrin) on modified graphite, with the Co-porphyrin electrode showing the highest efficiency for water reduction.
  • - The Co-porphyrin electrode demonstrated significant improvements in hydrogen production potential over time and maintained consistent hydrogen generation during testing, with the best turnover frequency noted among the three electrodes tested.
