Accumulation of Ni ions in vegetative bodies of 6- and 10-days shoots of peas and maize, as well as the influence of Ni compounds on accumulation of the glutathione reduced form and activity of glutathione-dependent antioxidant enzymes were investigated. It was established, that Ni accumulation by the root system of plants is carried more efficiently, than by leaves. The increase of concentration of these toxic cations in cultivation medium results in the decrease of the glutathione reduced form in vegetative bodies of plants. A general tendency to the increase of antioxidant enzymes activity is shown under the action of Ni compounds.

The lipid peroxidation product 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE) may be involved in vascular endothelial cell damage by induction of oxidative stress, apoptosis, and loss of redox homeostasis. There is evidence that stimulation of endothelial cells with 4-HNE induces the activation of the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2/Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Nrf2/Keap-1) pathway. Sestrin2 protein (SESN2) is one of the key regulators of Nrf2 and is involved in the cellular response to oxidative stress.

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) involves impaired upper airway muscle function and is linked to several pathologies including systemic hypertension, daytime somnolence and cognitive decline. Selenium is an essential micronutrient that exerts many of its effects through selenoproteins. Evidence indicates that either deficient or excessive dietary selenium intake can result in impaired muscle function, termed nutritional myopathy.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), such as phenanthrene (PHE), are common pollutants found in coastal areas where shrimp farming is developed. Even though PAHs can have adverse effects on physiology, shrimp can detoxify and metabolize toxic compounds and neutralize the reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced during this process. This requires the activation of multiple antioxidant enzymes, including peroxiredoxin 6 (Prx6).

Numerous studies have investigated seed aging, with a particular emphasis on the involvement of reactive oxygen species. Reactive oxygen species diffuse into the nucleus and damage telomeres, resulting in loss of genetic integrity. Telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) plays an essential role in maintaining plant genomic stability.
