Here we report a modified pulsed gradient spin-echo (PGSTE) pulse sequence to measure diffusion coefficients. This approach incorporates WATERGATE combined with isotopic filtering into a standard PGSTE experiment. Doing this eliminates much of the disadvantages from the combination of diffusion encoding and heteronuclear selection intervals and allows for facile modification of the diffusion pulse sequence with flexibility of the time period between RF pulses. The new diffusion pulse sequence is demonstrated using an 15N-labeled peptide and an 15N-labeled protein in a mixture with a protein of similar size.

Humic substances modulate bacterial communities and mitigate adverse effects of temperature stress in coral reef organisms.

J Appl Microbiol

January 2025

Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) and Department of Biology, University of Aveiro, Aveiro, Portugal.

Aims: In the present study, we tested if terrestrially-derived humic substances (HS) could mitigate the adverse effects of elevated temperature and UVB radiation on the bacterial communities of two hard corals (Montipora digitata and Montipora capricornis), one soft coral (Sarcophyton glaucum), sediment and water. We also examined the impact of temperature, UVB radiation and HS supplementation on coral photosynthetic activity, a proxy for coral bleaching.

Methods And Results: We performed a multifactorial experiment using a randomized-controlled microcosm setup.

The femtosecond dynamics of energy transfer from light-excited spirilloxanthin (Spx) to bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) a in the reaction centers (RCs) of purple photosynthetic bacteria Rhodospirillum rubrum was studied. According to crio-electron microscopy data, Spx is located near accessory BChl a in the B-branch of cofactors. Spx was excited by 25 fs laser pulses at 490 nm, and difference absorption spectra were recorded in the range 500-700 nm.

Nexus: A versatile console for advanced low-field MRI.

Magn Reson Med

January 2025

Department 8.1 - Biomedical Magnetic Resonance, Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), Braunschweig and Berlin, Germany.

Purpose: To develop a low-cost, high-performance, versatile, open-source console for low-field MRI applications that can integrate a multitude of different auxiliary sensors.

Methods: A new MR console was realized with four transmission and eight reception channels. The interface cards for signal transmission and reception are installed in PCI Express slots, allowing console integration in a commercial PC rack.

Pulse approach: a physics-guided machine learning model for thermal analysis in laser-based powder bed fusion of metals.

Prog Addit Manuf

Fast and accurate representation of heat transfer in laser powder-bed fusion of metals (PBF-LB/M) is essential for thermo-mechanical analyses. As an example, it benefits the detection of thermal hotspots at the design stage. While traditional physics-based numerical approaches such as the finite element (FE) method are applicable to a wide variety of problems, they are computationally too expensive for PBF-LB/M due to the space- and time-discretization requirements.

In this work, we introduce spatial and chemical saturation options for artefact reduction in magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF) and assess their impact on T and T mapping accuracy. An existing radial MRF pulse sequence was modified to enable spatial and chemical saturation. Phantom experiments were performed to demonstrate flow artefact reduction and evaluate the accuracy of the T and T maps.
