In this paper, factors influencing the flux decline of nanofiltration membranes for the treatment of dye bath wastewaters were investigated. Experiments were performed with synthetic wastewaters. Synthetic solutions were prepared in different dye and salt concentrations at laboratory conditions. Operating conditions including cross-flow velocity and pH were changed to observe the effects of interactions between NaCl, dyes and the membrane. Cake formation rate of dye molecules on membrane surface with time was investigated by using linearized forms of cake filtration equations. The results suggest that cake layer formation of dye molecules on membrane surface, especially at low salt concentrations was the principal cause of flux decline. Operating conditions had a strong influence on permeate flux. Effects of cross-flow velocity on permeate flux were more pronounced at low NaCl concentrations. Furthermore, the lowest permeate flux values were obtained at the alkaline conditions due to increased dye hydrophobicity at high pH values.

Cigarette smoke (CS), an indoor environmental pollution, is an environmental risk factor for diverse neurological disorders. However, the neurotoxicological effects and mechanisms of CS on Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression remain unclear. We found that CS accelerated the progression of AD, including increasing β-amyloid (Aβ) plaque deposition and exacerbating cognitive decline.

Nitric oxide synthases (NOSs) are heme-based monooxygenases that catalyze the NADPH-dependent oxidation of L-arginine to produce NO and L-citrulline. Over the past five years, the identification and characterization of NOS homologs in cyanobacteria have significantly advanced our understanding of these enzymes. However, the precise mechanisms through which NOS-derived NO influences nitrogen metabolism remain incompletely elucidated.

Enhancing Virus Filter Performance Through Pretreatment by Membrane Adsorbers.

Virus filtration is used to ensure the high level of virus clearance required in the manufacture of biopharmaceutical products such as monoclonal antibodies. Flux decline during virus filtration can occur due to the formation of reversible aggregates consisting of self-assembled monomeric monoclonal antibody molecules, particularly at high antibody concentrations. While size exclusion chromatography is generally unable to detect these reversible aggregates, dynamic light scattering may be used to determine their presence.

This study explored the batch membrane filtration of 40% ethanol extracts from spent lavender, containing valuable compounds like rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid, and luteolin, using a polyamide-urea thin film composite X201 membrane. Conducted at room temperature and 20 bar transmembrane pressure, the process demonstrated high efficiency, with rejection rates exceeding 98% for global antioxidant activity and 93-100% for absolute concentrations of the target components. During concentration, the permeate flux declined from 2.

Precipitation is an important factor influencing the date of foliar senescence, which in turn affects carbon uptake of terrestrial ecosystems. However, the temporal patterns of precipitation frequency and its impact on foliar senescence date remain largely unknown. Using both long-term carbon flux data and satellite observations across the Northern Hemisphere, we show that, after excluding impacts from of temperature, radiation and total precipitation by partial correlation analysis, declining precipitation frequency may drive earlier foliar senescence date from 1982 to 2022.
