Background: In the oral environment, the production of bacteriocins or antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance by impeding the proliferation of closely related microorganisms. This study aims to conduct in silico genome screening of Streptococcus salivarius to identify potential antimicrobial compounds existing as hypothetical peptides, with the goal of developing novel synthetic antimicrobial peptides.
Methods: Draft genomes of various oral Streptococcus salivarius strains were obtained from the NCBI database and subjected to analysis using bioinformatic tools, viz.

In this study, we present a new N-derivative of L-phenylalanine with 2-naphthaldehyde (PN), obtained by the Schiff base formation procedure and its subsequent reduction. This compound was crystallized as a zwitterion {2-[(naphthalen-2-ylmethyl)azaniumyl]-3-phenylpropanoate, CHNO}, as an anion in a sodium salt (catena-poly[[diaquasodium(I)-di-μ-aqua] 2-[(naphthalen-2-ylmethyl)amino]-3-phenylpropanoate monohydrate], {[Na(HO)](CHNO)·HO}), as a cation in a chloride salt [(1-carboxy-2-phenylethyl)(naphthalen-2-ylmethyl)azanium chloride acetic acid monosolvate, CHNO·Cl·CHCOOH], and additionally acting as a ligand in the pentacoordinated zinc compound aquabis{2-[(naphthalen-2-ylmethyl)amino]-3-phenylpropanoato-κO}zinc(II), [Zn(CHNO)(HO)] or [Zn(PN)(HO)], denoted (PN-Zn), with the amino acid derivative in its carboxylate form.

Aryl diazenes, particularly azobenzenes (AB), represent a versatile class of compounds with significant historical and practical relevance, ranging from dyes to molecular machines, solar thermal and electrochemical storage. Their oxygen-substituted counterparts, azoxybenzenes (AOB), share structural similarities but have been less explored, especially in energy storage applications. This study investigates the redox properties of AOB, comparing them to AB, and evaluates their potential as redox-active materials for energy storage systems.

Since the first Chapter dealt with the well-known charge-charge interactions familiar to biologists, this concluding Chapter introduces some key electrical forces, probably much less familiar, perhaps even unknown. LLPS (liquid liquid phase separation) which we have seen involved in so much of cell biology depends on multivalent, π-π and cation-π electrical forces. How these arise is dealt with here and may be especially useful as an aide memoir to return to when such issues arise within the bulk of the text.

Introduction: In recent years, cationic amphipathic antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have shown great promise in combating antibiotic resistance on account of their distinctive membrane-disruptive mechanism. However, the clinical application of AMPs is restricted by their unsatisfactory stability and safety. Although attempts have been made to improve the stability and safety of AMPs, many of them are accompanied by a decline in their antimicrobial activity and bacterial selectivity.
