Screening programmes for haemochromatosis that include follow-up identification of relatives are claimed to be cost effective. We assessed uptake of screening by first-degree relatives of two groups of index cases: people homozygous for the C282Y mutation ascertained by genetic screening of blood donors; and patients presenting clinically with haemochro matosis. Only 40 (24%) of 165 relatives of blood donors had been tested. By contrast, testing uptake in 121 relatives of patients diagnosed clinically was more than double that (53%), despite unstructured provision of genetic information. A substantial number of untested relatives had undiagnosed iron overload. Overall efficacy of population screening for haemochromatosis is undermined by these observations.

Parvovirus B19 (B19V) presents a significant concern in the context of blood transfusion safety, given its potential for transmission through contaminated blood products, and the increased viral circulation recently reported across Europe. This study examines the recent epidemiological trends of B19V in Italy, where a notable increase in B19V-positive plasma units was observed during early 2024. While routine NAT testing for B19V in individual blood donations is not currently justified, the existing screening protocols for plasma intended for industrial fractionation are crucial to ensure the safety of plasma-derived medicinal products.

Introduction: Research on the association between blood groups and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in Africa, including Algeria, is notably limited, with a primary focus on blood donors. This narrow scope hinders a comprehensive understanding of the genetic diversity of blood groups and their potential links to CVD risk within the African context. To bridge this knowledge gap, this study proposes to investigate the distribution of blood group genotypes and their association with CVD prevalence, aiming to enhance knowledge within the African context and contribute to global insights into the relationship between blood groups and CVD.

Background: Kidney failure is a prevalent condition with tendency for familial clustering in up to 27% of the affected individuals. Living kidney donor (LKD) transplantation is the optimal treatment option; however, in Canada, more than 45% of LKDs are biologically related to their recipients which subjects recipients to worse graft survival and donors to higher future risk of kidney failure. Although not fully understood, this observation could be partially explained by genetic predisposition to kidney diseases.

Objective: Thrombocytopenia is a common complication of hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT), though many patients will become immune refractory to platelet transfusions over time. We built and evaluated an electronic health record (EHR)-integrated, standards-based application that enables blood-bank clinicians to match platelet inventory with patients using data previously not available at the point-of-care, like human leukocyte antigen (HLA) data for donors and recipients.
Materials And Methods: The web-based application launches as an EHR-embedded application or as a standalone application.

BACKGROUND Despite its surgical complexity, kidney transplantation (KT) with multiple renal arteries (MRA) is comparable in performance to KT with a single renal artery (SRA). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of MRA and to investigate risk factors for graft loss in living-donor KT with MRA. MATERIAL AND METHODS This study included living-donor KT recipients who underwent KT in our hospital from February 2002 to March 2023.
