Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumors (CEOTs), also known as Pindborg tumors, are characterized by the presence of squamous-cell proliferation, calcification, and, notably, amyloid deposits. On the basis of immunohistochemical analyses, the amyloidogenic component had heretofore been deemed to consist of cytokeratin-related or other molecules; however, its chemical composition had never been elucidated. We have used our microanalytic techniques to characterize the protein nature of CEOT-associated amyloid isolated from specimens obtained from 3 patients. As evidenced by the results of amino-acid sequencing and mass spectrometry, the fibrils were found to be composed of a polypeptide of approximately 46 mer. This component was identical in sequence to the N-terminal portion of a hypothetical 153-residue protein encoded by the FLJ20513 gene cloned from the human KATO III cell line. That the amyloid protein was derived from this larger molecule was demonstrated by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction amplification of tumor-cell RNA where a full-length FLJ20513 transcript was found. Furthermore, immunohistochemical analyses revealed that the amyloid within the CEOTs immunostained with antibodies prepared against a synthetic FLJ20513-related dodecapeptide. Our studies provide unequivocal evidence that CEOT-associated amyloid consists of a unique and previously undescribed protein that we provisionally designate APin.

Pilomatrix carcinoma (PC) is a rare malignant adnexal tumor originating from follicular matrix cells primarily impacting Caucasian males. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of scientific literature on PC through an exploration of 206 cases reported between 1980 and 2024. We discuss the epidemiology, clinical presentation, histopathology, and diagnostic challenges of PC, and explore various treatment methods for this rare malignancy as well as their associated outcomes.

Objective: The study aimed to investigate the expression of hypoxia markers associated with invadopodia in glandular odontogenic cysts and to explore an association between this expression with the aggressive biological behaviour of this odontogenic cyst.
Design: Immunohistochemistry was employed to assess the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1α), notch homologous protein of the neurogenic locus 1 (NOTCH-1), disintegrin and metalloproteinase-12 (ADAM-12), and heparin-binding epidermal growth factor (HB-EGF) in 17 samples of glandular odontogenic cysts, 10 samples of calcifying odontogenic cysts, and 10 samples of dental follicles.
Results: The glandular odontogenic cyst samples exhibited increased expression of HIF-1α, NOTCH-1, ADAM-12 and HBEGF proteins compared with calcifying odontogenic cyst and dental follicle samples.

Background: Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor is a rare benign tumor that predominantly occurs in posterior sites of the mandible in adults.
Case Presentation: This case report describes a case of calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor in a 37-year-old Iranian female with the chief complaint of swelling in the anterior region of the mandible and tooth displacement. This paper summarized the pathological findings, radiographical features and clinical management of the patient.
