Bilateral central retinal artery occlusion in Churg-Strauss syndrome.

Am J Ophthalmol

Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine, Miyagi, Japan.

Published: December 2003

Purpose: To describe a rare bilateral central retinal artery occlusion in a patient with Churg-Strauss syndrome.

Design: Observational case report.

Methods: A 68-year-old Japanese man with Churg-Strauss syndrome developed sudden vision loss in both eyes. Medical history included bronchial asthma, elevated eosinophils, and aortic regurgitation.

Result: Central retinal artery occlusion was diagnosed by retinal whitening, a cherry-red spot, and delayed arteriovenous transit time on fluorescein angiography. Corticosteroids, cyclophosphamide, and anticoagulant therapy altered the hypereosinophilia and mononeuritis multiplex, but no visual recovery occurred during the following 2 years.

Conclusion: Bilateral central retinal artery occlusion can occur in Churg-Strauss syndrome. Patients with this diagnosis should be carefully followed.

Purpose: To assess the diagnostic capability of pattern electroretinography (PERG) and varying circumpapillary optical coherence tomography (OCT) scan diameters in glaucoma suspects (GS).

Methods: This is a prospective, cross-sectional study. Circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) was measured using spectral domain OCT in 49 eyes from 26 patients (36 normal, 13 GS) in three circle diameters (3.

Purpose: To correlate the optical coherence tomography (OCT) based morphological patterns of diabetic macular edema (DME) and prognostic biomarkers with severity of anaemia in patients with diabetic kidney disease (DKD).

Patients And Methods: Single centre, observational cross sectional study of 42 eyes of 42 patients with DME and DKD. Eyes were divided into 2 groups: Group A (Haemoglobin level above 10 g% and group B with haemoglobin less than 10 g%).

Background: Glaucoma, particularly open-angle glaucoma (OAG), is a leading cause of irreversible blindness, associated with optic nerve damage, retinal ganglion cell death, and visual field defects. Corneal biomechanical properties and cellular components, such as corneal nerve and keratocyte densities assessed by in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM), may serve as biomarkers for glaucoma progression. This study aimed to explore the relationship between corneal nerve parameters, keratocyte density, and optical coherence tomography (OCT)-derived retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients and controls.

Background: Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is a rare but critical complication that might appear after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with a high risk of blindness. The report on the nursing management of CRAO patients after PCI is rare.

Case Description: This patient is a 50-year-old female patient who was admitted to the Cardiovascular Department with repeated chest tightness.

Can fundus features tell us something about 3D eye shape?

Ophthalmic Physiol Opt

January 2025

Robert O Curle Ophthalmology Suite, Institute for Regeneration and Repair, The University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, UK.

Purpose: To determine whether imaging features derived from fundus photographs contain 3D eye shape information beyond that available from spherical equivalent refraction (SER).

Methods: We analysed 99 eyes of 68 normal adults in the UK Biobank. An ellipsoid was fitted to the entire volume of each posterior eye (vitreous chamber without the lens)-segmented from magnetic resonance imaging of the brain.
