A new method for the formation of conjugated polyynes has been developed based on both the rearrangement of vinylidenes to alkynes and the [2+1] cheletropic fragmentation of dialkynylmethylenebicyclo[4.3.1]deca-1,3,5-triene derivatives. A model study of the photolysis of simple dialkynylmethylenebicyclo[4.3.1]deca-1,3,5-trienes resulted in cheletropic fragmentation followed by 1,2-migration to give the corresponding linear polyynes, although undesired isomerization to methylenebicyclo[5.3.0]triene derivatives took place concurrently. Expanded [3]-, [4]-, [5]-, and [6]radialene derivatives with exocyclic bicyclo[4.3.1]decatriene units were prepared by oxidative coupling of the monomeric units as precursors to the corresponding cyclo[n]carbons, monocyclic forms of carbon clusters. The spectroscopic properties of the expanded radialenes were investigated in connection with cross conjugation of the core pi system and with its perturbation by the extraannular bicyclic pi system. In negative-mode laser-desorption time-of-flight (LD-TOF) mass spectra, the expanded radialenes exhibited peaks due to the corresponding cyclo[n]carbon anions (n = 18, 24, 30, and 36) formed by the stepwise loss of the aromatic indane fragments.

Radialenes and expanded radialenes are cross-conjugated macrocycles displaying poor aromatic character. In this work, three 9-fluorenylidene substituted expanded [n]radialenes (ER-n, n=3-5) with a diacetylene spacer were synthesized and their structures were confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis and NMR spectroscopy. They all can be easily reduced into relatively stable dianions.

A pentagonal macrocycle (MC5-PER) with radialene topology was facilely synthesized through a selective one-pot Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. The resulting product is endowed with a pentagonal architecture as revealed by its single crystal structure, which affords the smallest ring strain and the best conjugation. As tetraphenylethene subunits are embedded, MC5-PER is highly emissive in the solid state due to the aggregation-induced emission effect.

The first general preparative access to compounds of the 2,3-diethynyl-1,3-butadiene (DEBD) class is reported. The synthesis involves a one-pot, twofold Sonogashira-type, Pd -catalyzed coupling of two terminal alkynes and a carbonate derivative of a 2-butyne-1,4-diol. The synthesis is broad in scope and members of this structural family are kinetically stable enough to be handled using standard laboratory techniques at ambient temperature.

The synthesis of donor- (D) and/or acceptor (A)-expanded [4]radialenes has been developed on the basis of readily available dibromoolefin (7), tetraethynylethene (10 and 20), and vinyl triflate (12) building blocks. The successful formation of D/A radialenes relies especially on (1) effective use of a series alkynyl protecting groups, (2) Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions, and (3) the development of ring closing reactions to form the desired macrocyclic products. The expanded [4]radialene products have been investigated by spectroscopic (UV-vis absorption and emission) and quantum chemical computational methods (density functional theory and time dependent DFT).
