Uterine peristalsis shown on cine MR imaging using ultrafast sequence.

Published: December 2003

Purpose: To demonstrate and evaluate uterine peristalsis on cine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using ultrafast imaging.

Materials And Methods: Serial MR uterine images (300) were obtained from 15 normal volunteers over four menstrual phases using true fast imaging with steady-state precession (true FISP) technique over 117 seconds and videotaped. Three radiologists independently evaluated videotapes of 59 studies. Uterine peristalsis was defined as wavy movements of subendometrial myometrium or endometrium. Interobserver reliability was evaluated using a Kappa coefficient. Fifty-four studies obtained in appropriate phases were analyzed.

Results: Cine MRI displayed uterine peristalsis in 30 of 59 studies; consensus reading showed direction in 23 studies. Reliability between the final consensus of the recognition of uterine peristalsis and those of the three readers was extremely concordant, with a Kappa coefficient of 0.908. Wave direction was cervico-fundal in follicular and periovulatory phases, with frequency of contraction waves being 1.2-2.3 per minute in positive studies.

Conclusion: Uterine peristalsis was demonstrated on cine MR using ultrafast MRI. Direction and frequency of peristaltic waves are closely related to menstrual cycle phases. Objective: To retrospectively investigate the efficacy of phloroglucinol administration after freeze-thawed embryo transfer in patients experiencing recurrent implantation failure (RIF).

Materials And Methods: A total of 139 infertile couples who experienced RIF undergoing in vitro fertilisation and embryo transfer were divided into the control (n = 66) and the phloroglucinol (n = 73) groups. Women in the phloroglucinol group received 80 mg phloroglucinol 30 min after transfer, then once daily up to day 3 after the embryo transfer.

Mechanism of Endometrial Receptivity Affected by Fibroids.

Am J Reprod Immunol

December 2024

Center of Reproductive Medicine, Weifang People's Hospital, Weifang, China.

Fibroids are the most common benign tumors of the female reproductive system. Most patients with fibroids are asymptomatic, but the presence of fibroids can still cause some abnormal clinical symptoms, such as increased menstrual volume, abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic pain, urinary tract and gastrointestinal tract compression symptoms, etc. The impact of fibroids on pregnancy is worth discussing.

Rationale: The postoperative gastrointestinal dysfunction after cesarean section is commonly presented as uncomfortable symptoms such as abdominal pain and distension. As a novel traditional Chinese medicine characteristic therapy, the fire dragon cupping can effectively enhance intestinal peristalsis and improve the gastrointestinal discomforts by using the manipulation and moxibustion heat to stimulate acupuncture points. The purpose of this report is to provide a new approach and new ideas for rapid rehabilitation of gastrointestinal dysfunction after cesarean section.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate how transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) influences uterine peristalsis (UP) patterns in nonpregnant participants, using a noninvasive UP imaging system to gather data.
  • Conducted at a university medical center, the research included 28 participants who underwent imaging during the four phases of the menstrual cycle, comparing UP measurements before and during TVUS.
  • Results indicated that TVUS significantly altered the frequency, magnitude, and duration of UP waves across all menstrual phases, suggesting that noninvasive methods might better assess physiological uterine activity.

Study Question: Can a functional in vitro model, containing the main cellular components of the uterine wall, be generated from cells derived from patient tissues?

Summary Answer: We present a three-dimensional (3D) physiologically relevant, organ-on-a-chip model of the uterine wall containing primary endometrial and myometrial cellular participants, generated from human uterine tissue.

What Is Known Already: As a highly dynamic reproductive organ, the human uterus plays fundamental physiological roles in menstruation and childbirth. The endometrial-myometrial junction (EMJ) defines the interface between the inner mucosal layer (endometrium) and outer smooth muscle zone (myometrium) that comprises the uterine wall.
