Human noroviruses are the leading cause of non-bacterial shellfish-associated gastroenteritis. In 2022, a multi-jurisdictional norovirus outbreak associated with contaminated oysters occurred that involved hundreds of illnesses. Here, we conducted genetic analysis on 30 clinical samples associated with this oyster outbreak.

Early identification of potentially reversible cancer cachexia using explainable machine learning driven by body weight dynamics: a multicenter cohort study.

Am J Clin Nutr

January 2025

Department of Nephrology, Chongqing Key Laboratory of Prevention and Treatment of Kidney Disease, Chongqing Clinical Research Center of Kidney and Urology Diseases, Xinqiao Hospital, Army Medical University (Third Military Medical University), Chongqing 400037, China. Electronic address:

Background: Cachexia is associated with multiple adverse outcomes in cancer. However, clinical decision-making for oncology patients at the cachexia stage presents significant challenges.

Objective: This study aims to develop a machine learning (ML) model to identify potentially reversible cancer cachexia (PRCC).

Unidirectional and bidirectional causation between smoking and blood DNA methylation: evidence from twin-based Mendelian randomisation.

Eur J Epidemiol

January 2025

Department of Psychiatry, Virginia Institute for Psychiatric and Behavioral Genetics, Virginia Commonwealth University, 800 E. Leigh St., Suite 100, Richmond, VA, 23298, USA.

Cigarette smoking is associated with numerous differentially-methylated genomic loci in multiple human tissues. These associations are often assumed to reflect the causal effects of smoking on DNA methylation (DNAm), which may underpin some of the adverse health sequelae of smoking. However, prior causal analyses with Mendelian Randomisation (MR) have found limited support for such effects.

Purpose:  We aimed to evaluate the association between socioeconomic factors and patient-reported Western Ontario Osteoarthritis of the Shoulder (WOOS) index at 1 year after hemiarthroplasty, reverse, or anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty for osteoarthritis or cuff-tear arthropathy.

Methods:  Eligible patients were identified using linked national data from the Danish Shoulder Arthroplasty Registry and Statistics Denmark between April 2012 and April 2019. Univariable and multivariable linear regression was used to identify the association between socioeconomic factors and the WOOS index at 1 year following primary shoulder arthroplasty adjusted for age, sex, underlying diagnosis, implant design, and comorbidities.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Amsterdam Neuroscience, Neurodegeneration, Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Background: Synaptic dysfunction plays an important role in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and cognitive decline. We investigated the association between cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) synaptic protein levels and quantitative EEG (qEEG) measures, two modalities to measure synaptic dysfunction in AD pathology. We assessed combined and independent prognostic value of both modalities for cognitive decline along the AD continuum.
