Species in the genus Hypoplectrus (hamlet fish) have been recognized primarily on the basis of colour morphology, which varies substantially. Limited differentiation in other morphological characters, however, has led to ongoing debate about their taxonomy. Our analysis of mtDNA sequences demonstrates neither reciprocal monophyly nor significant genetic differentiation among hamlet colour morphs. These data are potentially consistent with a model of recent speciation due to sexual selection on colour morphology. The presence within hamlets of two divergent mtDNA clades, however, suggests a longer history during which hybridization and gene flow have prevented the differentiation of hamlet colour morphs, at least in neutral genetic markers.

Background/aims: Bruise is the extravasation of blood that may be mild or severe. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) are one of the most promising cells used in regenerative medicine for treating many disorders. We aimed to evaluate the efficiency of BM-MSCs in treating cutaneous bruises.

Background: Trait variation is shaped by functional roles of traits and the strength and direction of selection acting on the traits. We hypothesized that in butterflies, sexually selected colouration is more variable owing to condition-dependent nature and directional selection on sexual ornaments, whereas naturally selected colouration may be less variable because of stabilising selection. We measured reflectance spectra, and extracted colour parameters, to compare the amount of variation in sexually versus naturally selected colour patches across wing surfaces and sexes of 20 butterfly species across 4 families (Nymphalidae, Papilionidae, Pieridae, Lycaenidae).

The concentration, character, and distribution of microplastics in coastal marine environments remain poorly understood, with most research focusing on the abundance of microplastics at the sea surface. To address this gap, we conducted one of the first comprehensive assessments of microplastic distribution through the marine water column and in the benthic sediment during the wet and dry season in the coastal waters of the San Pedro Shelf, Southern California, USA. Microplastic concentrations in the water column did not vary significantly across season but were significantly higher in nearshore environments and at the surface of the water column.

Ticks are of veterinary importance as they transmit various pathogens to animals. In Yaeyama, Okinawa, Japan, Haemaphysalis longicornis became the dominant tick species after the eradication of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus in the 1990s. However, any recent changes remained unclear due to lack of surveys.

The wilting and yellowing of leafy vegetables caused by spoilage bacteria resulted in serious resource wastage. This study investigated the efficacy of a combined lactic acid (LA) and tartaric acid (TA) treatment against four predominant spoilage bacteria (Erwinia persicina, Citrobacter freundii, Pseudomonas putida, and Pseudomonas punonensis) isolated from spinach and oilseed rape. Detailed analysis using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, flow cytometry, scanning electron microscopy, and light microscopy revealed substantial cellular damage in the bacteria treated by LA and TA, including loss of intracellular material, and collapse of cellular morphology, as well as effective biofilm removal.
