This study was designed to evaluate the effect of melatonin on cholestatic oxidative stress under constant light exposure. Cholestasis was induced by double ligature and section of the extra-hepatic bile duct. Melatonin was injected i.p.(1000 microg kg(-1) day(-1)). Malondialdehyde, reduced glutathione, catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase, peroxidase and transferase were determined in liver. After bile-duct obstruction and under constant light exposure, an increase in malondialdehyde (p < 0.05) and a slight decrease in reduced glutathione were seen. Enzyme activity, with the exception of glutathione reductase, had significantly diminished. After melatonin administration, malondialdehyde fell (p < 0.001), whereas there was an increase in reduced glutathione (p < 0.0001) compared with untreated controls. Constant light exposure was associated with an increase in hepatic oxidative stress. Treatment with melatonin decreased lipid peroxide synthesis, and permitted a recovery of both reduced glutathione and scavenger enzyme activity.

UNESCO-UNISA Africa Chair in Nanosciences-Nanotechnology, College of Graduate Studies, University of South Africa, Muckleneuk Ridge, PO Box 392, Pretoria, South Africa.

This research successfully synthesized semiconductive magnesioferrite (MgFeO) nanomaterials using a green chemistry method that utilizes the natural extract of Moringa olefeira serving as both a reducing and oxidizing agent. The optical characteristics and crystalline structure of the MgFeO nanomaterials were analysed using photoluminescence, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Additionally, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy provided valuable insights into the chemical bonding and composition.

Two-dimensional organic-inorganic perovskites have garnered extensive interest owing to their unique structure and optoelectronic performance. However, their loose structures complicate the elucidation of mechanisms and tend to cause uncertainty and variations in experimental and calculated results. This can generally be rooted in dynamically swinging spacer molecules through two mechanisms: one is the intrinsic geometric steric effect, and the other is related to the electronic effect orbital overlapping and electronic screening.

Acidic Engineering on Buried Interface toward Efficient Inorganic CsPbI Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes.

Inorganic CsPbI perovskite has emerged as a promising emitter for deep-red light-emitting diodes (LEDs) due to its intrinsic thermal stability and suitable bandgap. However, uncontrollable CsPbI crystallization induced by an alkaline zinc oxide (ZnO) substrate in bulk film-based LEDs leads to insufficient external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) at high brightness, leaving obstacles in commercialization progress. Herein, we demonstrate an effective acidic engineering strategy with wide applicability to modify the surface property of ZnO and regulate CsPbI crystallization.

Van der Waals (vdW) semiconductors have emerged as promising platforms for efficient nonlinear optical conversion, including harmonic and entangled photon generation. Although major efforts are devoted to integrating vdW materials in nanoscale waveguides for miniaturization, the realization of efficient, phase-matched conversion in these platforms remains challenging. Here, to address this challenge, we report a far-field ultrafast imaging method to track the propagation of both fundamental and harmonic waves within vdW waveguides with femtosecond and sub-50 nanometre spatiotemporal precision.
