Background: To establish the rate of HGV/GB virus C (GBV-C) transmission by blood components in open-heart surgery patients.

Study Design And Methods: From 55 patients receiving blood components, sera were collected before and 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 26, and 32 weeks after heart surgery. Serum samples from patients and implicated blood donations were tested for HGV/GBV-C RNA by PCR. Recipients of RNA-positive blood components were also tested for the presence of E2 antibodies (E2Ab) by ELISA.

Results: Of 55 recipients, 18 received RNA-positive blood components. Of 14 recipients of RNA-positive blood components, who were negative for RNA or E2Ab before transfusion, 8 became RNA positive and one developed E2Ab after transfusion. Three recipients of RNA-positive blood components had E2Ab before transfusion, and none of these became RNA positive after transfusion. One of 18 recipients was RNA positive before and after transfusion. Of 55 recipients, 37 received RNA-negative blood components: 34 were RNA negative before and after transfusion. Of 37 recipients, 3 were RNA positive before and after transfusion.

Conclusion: Of susceptible patients, 64 percent became infected with HGV/GVC-C when transfused with RNA-positive blood components. E2Ab-positive patients were protected against HGV/GBV-C infection.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the regulatory effects of long non-coding RNA-ANRIL on CDKN2A in the cell cycle of Kasumi-1 cells and elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms.

Methods: ANRIL and CDKN2A expression levels were quantified using RT-qPCR in peripheral blood samples from acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients. CDKN2A knockdown efficiency was validated via RT-qPCR, and cell cycle distribution was analyzed using flow cytometry.

Background: In severely injured trauma patients, hypofibrinoginaemia is associated with increased mortality. There is no evidence-based consensus for what constitutes optimal fibrinogen therapy, treatment dose or timing of administration. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the effects of early fibrinogen replacement, either cryoprecipitate or fibrinogen concentrate (FgC) on mortality, transfusion requirements and deep venous thrombosis (DVT).

Microenvironmental determinants of endothelial cell heterogeneity.

Nat Rev Mol Cell Biol

During development, endothelial cells (ECs) undergo an extraordinary specialization by which generic capillary microcirculatory networks spanning from arteries to veins transform into patterned organotypic zonated blood vessels. These capillary ECs become specialized to support the cellular and metabolic demands of each specific organ, including supplying tissue-specific angiocrine factors that orchestrate organ development, maintenance of organ-specific functions and regeneration of injured adult organs. Here, we illustrate the mechanisms by which microenvironmental signals emanating from non-vascular niche cells induce generic ECs to acquire specific inter-organ and intra-organ functional attributes.

Metallofullerenols and fullerenols have attracted attention due to their remarkable ability to interact with various biologically relevant molecules, paving the way for biomedical applications, ranging from medical imaging techniques to drug carriers, acting with increased efficiency and reduced side effects. In this work, we investigated the effects of two fullerene derivatives, Gd@C(OH) and C(OH), on erythrocyte membrane components under oxidative stress conditions induced by 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH) as a source of peroxyl radicals. The results demonstrated that gadolinium encapsulation within the fullerene cage enhanced the electron affinity of Gd@C(OH), resulting in stronger antioxidant activity.

Background: The most frequently ordered laboratory test worldwide is the complete blood count (CBC). As clinical chemists are increasingly assigned to assist or direct laboratories outside of the traditional clinical chemistry sections, such as the automated hematology section, expertise must be established. This review article is a dedication to that ongoing effort.
