Published: November 2003

Colostomy shift en masse is a novel technique in which the colostomy is shifted along with a rim of skin and abdominal wall tissue. This provides additional length of distal bowel if needed during pull-through anastomosis. We have treated three cases (two Hirschsprung's disease and one anorectal malformation) with colostomy shift en masse, and have achieved good results.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on anorectal malformation (ARM), a common birth defect in children, highlighting a shift from a traditional three-stage repair to a more efficient single-stage procedure called ASARP for treating vestibular fistulas and perineal fistulas in females.
  • - Conducted at Government Medical College in Jammu, the research involved 60 female patients, primarily aged 1-5 years, and analyzed both intraoperative and postoperative complications, noting issues like vaginal and rectal tears.
  • - The results suggest that the single-stage ASARP procedure leads to satisfactory outcomes with fewer complications, improving both cosmetic and functional results for patients while easing the emotional and practical burden on families and healthcare providers.

Introduction: Despite the shift toward liberal primary anastomosis in penetrating colon injuries, some surgeons recommend a protective diverting ostomy (DO) proximal to the anastomosis. This study evaluates the effect of DO on outcomes in patients undergoing colon resection and anastomosis following penetrating trauma.

Methods: The TQIP database (2013-2018) was queried for penetrating colon injuries undergoing colectomy and anastomosis.
