3-hydroxyphenylacetylene (3-HPA) served as a novel, activity-dependent, fluorogenic and chromogenic probe for bacterial enzymes known to degrade toluene via meta ring fission of the intermediate, 3-methylcatechol. By this direct physiological analysis, cells grown with an aromatic substrate to induce the synthesis of toluene-degrading enzymes were fluorescently labeled.

This study investigates the use of nano-sized oxygen bubbles (NOBs) to enhance BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene) biodegradation in groundwater. Optimized NOBs, averaging 155 nm and at a concentration of 6.59 × 10⁸ bubbles/mL, were found to provide sustained oxygen release with a half-life of approximately 50 days.

Toluene intoxication constitutes a persistent public health problem worldwide. While most organs can be damaged, the brain is a primary target whether exposure is accidental, occupational, or recreational. Interventions to prevent/revert brain damage by toluene are curtailed by the scarce information on the molecular targets and mechanisms mediating toluene's brain toxicity and the common exposure to other neurotoxins and/or coexistence of neurological/psychiatric disorders.
