Published: November 2003

Molecules were prepared with substituted nitrobenzyl groups covalently bonded to N-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzyl)acetamide (2) by ether or carbonate linkages. These compounds decomposed under irradiation at 363 nm. Those with carbonate linkages decomposed at slower rates than those with ether linkages. Molecules with dimethoxy-substituted benzyl groups decomposed more slowly than monomethoxy-substituted benzyl groups due to the electronic characteristics of the benzylic carbon.

sp-carbon-linked covalent organic frameworks (spc-COFs) are crystalline porous polymers with repeat organic units linked by sp carbons, and have attracted increasing interest due to their robust skeleton and tunable semiconducting properties. Single-crystalline spc-COFs with well-defined structures can represent an ideal platform for investigating fundamental physics properties and device performance. However, the robust olefin bonds inhibit the reversible-reaction-based crystal self-correction, thus yielding polycrystalline or amorphous polymers.

Boosting the Actuation Performance of a Dynamic Supramolecular Polyurethane-Urea Elastomer via Kinetic Control.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

College of Polymer Science and Engineering, State Key Laboratory of Polymer Materials Engineering, Sichuan University, Chengdu 610065, China.

The ongoing soft actuation has accentuated the demand for dielectric elastomers (DEs) capable of large deformation to replace the traditional rigid mechanical apparatus. However, the low actuation strain of DEs considerably limits their practical applications. This work developed high-performance polyurethane-urea (PUU) elastomers featuring large actuation strains utilizing an approach of kinetic control over the microphase separation structure during the fabrication process.

Bismuth-based photocatalysts proved to have remarkable photoactivity for antibiotic degradation from water. However, the two significant challenges of bismuth-based photocatalysts are the fast charge recombination rate and higher energy band gap. This study successfully synthesized a novel I-Bi/BiWO/MWCNTs (C-WBI) heterostructure composite photocatalysts with shorter energy band-gap and higher charge production capability through interfacial amidation linkage.

Engineering Air-Stable Triarylmethyl Radicals with One Pyrrole Ring.

Org Lett

January 2025

School of Chemistry, Engineering Research Center of Energy Storage Materials and Devices, Ministry of Education, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an 710049, China.

Herein, seven air-stable triarylmethyl radicals (-), each featuring a pyrrole ring, were successfully synthesized. A comprehensive investigation into the linkages at the α-, β-, and -positions of the pyrrole ring, along with various substituents, revealed that the p-π conjugation between the central radical carbon and the pyrrole ring plays a crucial role in the distribution of spin density and overall stability. Notably, radicals to displayed excellent electrochemical and photostability.

Unraveling the drivers of optimal stomatal behavior in global C plants: A carbon isotope perspective.

Sci Total Environ

December 2024

College of Life Sciences and Oceanography, Shenzhen University, Shenzhen 518060, China. Electronic address:

Understanding the drivers of stomatal behavior is critical for modeling terrestrial carbon cycle and water balance. The unified stomatal optimization (USO) model provides a mechanistic linkage between stomatal conductance (g) and photosynthesis (A), with its slope parameter (g) inversely related to intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE), providing a key proxy to characterize the differences in iWUE and stomatal behavior. While many studies have identified multiple environmental factors influencing g, the potential role of evolutionary history in shaping g remains incompletely understood.
