Establishing a general biosynthetic scheme for natural products is critical for a broader understanding of natural product biosynthesis and the structural prediction of metabolites based on genome sequence information. High-carbon sugar nucleoside antimicrobials are an underexplored class of natural products with unique structures and important biological activities. Recent studies on C6 sugar nucleoside antifungal natural products, such as nikkomycins and polyoxins, revealed a novel biosynthetic mechanism involving cryptic phosphorylation.

Natural products play an important role as lead structures for the identification of novel active ingredients in crop protection. As it is the case in the pharmaceutical industry, however, many crop protection companies have substantially decreased their in-house efforts in natural product exploration. Therefore, joint projects with academic research groups become more and more important in the field.

Background: Malayamycin is a novel perhydrofuropyran C-nucleoside isolated from Streptomyces malaysiensis that shows promising antifungal activity, fully controlling a range of diseases when applied to plants at 100 microg mL(-1). The goal of this study was to determine the mode of action.
Results: Malayamycin exhibited in vitro antifungal activity against Stagonospora nodorum (Berk) Castell & Germano, the cause of stagonospora nodorum blotch of wheat.
