Published: October 2003

DNA separation is important for numerous applications in biotechnology and medicine. Efforts to improve DNA separation in microdevices have led to advances in capillary electrophoresis and the development of novel separation strategies. Current research on microcapillary electrophoresis materials is focused on the development of separation matrices with low injection viscosities and wall-coating capabilities. Microcapillary injector geometries are being designed to allow increased control of sample plug volumes. Novel separation strategies using entropic traps, arrays of pillars and Brownian ratchets are also being developed.

Pluripotent stem cells possess a unique nuclear architecture characterized by a larger nucleus and more open chromatin, which underpins their ability to self-renew and differentiate. Here, we show that the nucleolus-specific RNA helicase DDX18 is essential for maintaining the pluripotency of human embryonic stem cells. Using techniques such as Hi-C, DNA/RNA-FISH, and biomolecular condensate analysis, we demonstrate that DDX18 regulates nucleolus phase separation and nuclear organization by interacting with NPM1 in the granular nucleolar component, driven by specific nucleolar RNAs.

Honeybees, Apis mellifera, have experienced the full impacts of globalisation, including the recent invasion by the parasitic mite Varroa destructor, now one of the main causes of colony losses worldwide. The strong selection pressure it exerts has led some colonies to develop defence strategies conferring some degree of resistance to the parasite. Assuming these traits are partly heritable, selective breeding of naturally resistant bees could be a sustainable strategy for fighting infestations.

PqsE and RhlR, key regulators of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa quorum sensing (QS) system, form a hetero-tetrameric complex essential for controlling the expression of virulence factors such as pyocyanin. The interaction between the PqsE homodimer and the RhlR homodimer bound to C4-HSL, enables RhlR to bind low-affinity promoters, thereby influencing gene regulation. Recent studies suggest that RhlR transcriptional activity is modulated by temperature, exhibiting higher activity at environmental temperatures (25 °C) compared to mammalian body temperature (37 °C).

Best Practices and Pitfalls in Developing Nanomaterial Delivery Tools for Plants.

ACS Nano

December 2024

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, Berkeley, California 94720, United States.

Numerous reports of nanomaterial-assisted delivery of DNA, RNA, and protein to plants for biotechnology applications emerged over the past decade. While the field has experienced rapid growth, best practices for developing and validating nanomaterial delivery tools for plants have not yet been established. Best practices are well-established for clinical/animal cell delivery experiments, yet plants pose a distinct challenge requiring separate considerations due to their unique tissue structures and cellular morphology.

The Anopheles maculipennis complex consists of several mosquito species, including some primary malaria vectors. Therefore, the presence of a species in a particular area significantly affects public health. In this study, 1252 mosquitoes were collected in northern Italy, representing four identified species of the Anopheles maculipennis complex (Anopheles daciae sp.
