The interaction of bacteria and harmonine in harlequin ladybird confers an interspecies competitive edge.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

January 2025

Zhejiang Key Laboratory of Biology and Ecological Regulation of Crop Pathogens and Insects, Institute of Insect Sciences, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, Zhejiang 310058, China.

The harlequin ladybird, , is a predatory beetle used globally to control pests such as aphids and scale insects. Originating from East Asia, this species has become highly invasive since its introduction in the late 19th century to Europe and North America, posing a threat to local biodiversity. Intraguild predation is hypothesized to drive the success of this invasive species, but the underlying mechanisms remain unknown.

In this comprehensive analysis of Chile's air quality dynamics spanning 2016 to 2021, the utilization of data from the National Air Quality Information System (SINCA) and its network of monitoring stations was undertaken. Quintero, Puchuncaví, and Coyhaique were the focal points of this study, with the primary objective being the construction of predictive models for sulfur dioxide (SO2), fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and coarse particulate matter (PM10).

Synergetic Contributions of High Quenching Concentration and Tuned Square Antiprism Geometry Boosting Far-Red Emission of Eu with Near-Unit Efficiency.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

January 2025

Yunnan Key Laboratory of Electromagnetic Materials and Devices, National Center for International Research on Photoelectric and Energy Materials, School of Materials and Energy, Yunnan University, Kunming, 650091, China.

Far-red phosphors have emerged as a desirable research hotspot owing to their critical role in promoting plant growth. Especially, Eu ions typically present the D→F (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) transitions, which overlap with the far-red light required for plant photosynthesis. However, achieving high-efficiency far-red emission of Eu remains challenging due to weak D→F transition and concentration quenching.

Background: Medications initially intended for diabetes treatment are now being used by other patients for weight loss. In the specialized literature, there are numerous meta-analyses investigating this aspect.

Areas Of Uncertainty: The authors aimed to explore whether the application of scientometric methods for literature review within meta-analyses could provide clear answers to specific research questions.

Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection poses a major health risk worldwide, with patients susceptible to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. This study focuses on the development of effective therapeutic strategies for HCV infection through the investigation of immunogenic properties of a DNA construct based on the NS3/4A gene of HCV genotype (g)3a. Gene expression of the mutagenized (mut) NS3/4A target genes was assessed through reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and Western blot analysis.
