The possibility of Alcaligenes eutrophus T1 luxphenotype creation by temperature induced mutagenesis has been shown. These mutants are able to emit light after induction by thallium ions. This biological method of thallium detection possesses high specificity and sensitivity (0.5 microM of metal). Such microbial cells can be used to quantify bioavailability of thallium part in the environment.

Bioluminescence is a functional property used by many marine organisms for multilateral communications. In the Arabian Sea, the dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans (Macartney) Kofoid and Swezy, 1921, contributes gradually to the bioluminescent potential (BP) of the phytoplankton community. Experiments, field sampling, and remote sensing were employed, to estimate the seasonal variation of the BP and the abundance of cells in the northwestern Arabian Sea.

Bioluminescence imaging (BLI) is a powerful, noninvasive imaging method for animal studies. NanoLuc luciferase and its derivatives are attractive bioluminescent reporters recognized for their efficient photon production and ATP independence. However, utilizing them for animal imaging poses notable challenges.

The deep-sea open ocean habitat (below 200 m depth) is comprised of little-to-no light, near freezing temperatures, and vastly connected stratified waters. Bioluminescence is often linked to the success and diversification of fishes in these dark deep-sea habitats, which are host to many species-rich and morphologically diverse clades. Fish bioluminescence takes many forms and is used in a variety of behaviors including counterillumination, prey detection and luring, communication, and predator avoidance.

Peptide-based biofluorescents are of great interest due to their controllability and biocompatibility, as well as their potential applications in biomedical imaging and biosensing. Here, we present a simple approach to synthesizing full-color fluorescent nanomaterials with broad-spectrum fluorescence emissions, high optical stability, and long fluorescence lifetimes. By doping amino acids during the enzyme-catalyzed oxidative self-assembly of tyrosine-based peptides, we can precisely control the intermolecular interactions to obtain nanoparticles with fluorescence emission at different wavelengths.
