Introduction: Chondrosarcomas are malignant tumours and need to be treated aggressively including ablative surgery. Bovée et al. and Mankin have recently drawn attention to a less aggressive behaviour of chondrosarcomas of the phalanges compared with those of other localizations including the metacarpals.

Materials And Methods: An 12 year follow-up of a patient with a chondrosarcoma of the middle phalanx of the index finger is presented. The lesion was curetted initially, and a repeat curettage was performed 4 years later. Finally, 8 years later the phalanx was excised and reconstructed with an osteocartilaginous allograft. Histologically, the lesion changed from a chondrosarcoma grade I to grade II.

Result: The patient continues to be free of recurrence and metastases 4 years after the final resection.

Conclusion: The potential for systemic disease of chondrosarcomas of the phalanges is probably much lower than in chondrosarcomas of other localizations, and therefore digit-sparing techniques may be considered rather than ablative procedures.

Introduction: Sarcomas are relatively rare malignant tumors of mesenchymal origin, representing only about 1% of tumors in the head and neck region.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective study involved patients with sarcomas of the head and neck region who were diagnosed and treated over a 5-year period.

Results: Nine patients were included, 4 men and 5 women.

Petroclival approaches remain challenging given abundant cranial nerves and vessels. Common trajectories include transsphenoidal, transoral, middle fossa-extradural, and posterior through the cerebellar peduncle. We report a unique intra-axial, intradural approach to the petroclival and cavernous sinus.

Article Synopsis
  • Chondrosarcoma most often forms in the pelvis and femur, and while surgical removal is the main treatment for tumors in the ribs, it can create significant challenges for chest wall reconstruction.
  • A 49-year-old woman with a diagnosed Grade I chondrosarcoma had a large mass affecting her ribs and diaphragm, leading to a complete surgical resection of the tumor and surrounding affected structures, followed by reconstruction using mesh and sutures.
  • The histopathology revealed a Grade II chondrosarcoma, but the patient had an uneventful recovery, highlighting the need for careful planning and collaborative approaches in treating such cases.

To study the feasibility and efficacy of pericranial flaps for the repairs of large anterior skull base defects. The average length of the pericranial flaps needed for skull base repair was determined with computed tomography measurements in 20 adults and anatomical dissections in 5 cadaver specimen. A series of patients who underwent endoscopic skull base surgeries and subsequent reconstructions with pericranial flaps at the Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine Affiliated Sixth People's Hospital from 2016 to 2022 were retrospectively reviewed.
