Because of their special characteristics Capillary pore membranes (CPM) are now applied in several branches of separation techniques and analytics. Besides applications in particle analytics and microfiltration of different media capillary pore membranes can be used in microorganism separation. It was shown that RoTrac CPM can be used for bacteria free (or so called sterile) filtration. Acceptable fluxes were reached in separation of Pseudomonas diminuta (test species ATCC 19146). Membranes with pore diameters of 0.2 micron and smaller always assure a bacteria free filtrate even for a very high bacteria count of about 10(7)-10(8) bacteria/ml. In filtration of Mycoplasma arginini no sterile filtrate was obtained for a pore diameter of 0.08 micron and a high bacteria count of 3 * 10(7) bacteria/ml. The bacteria rejection by a factor of 10(5) was however remarkable. Only for 0.05 and 0.08 micron with reduced bacteria load the filtrate was bacteria free.

Three-dimensional characterization of nanoporous membranes by capillary filling using high speed interferometry.

A high-speed interferometric system was developed to analyze nanostructured porous silicon (PS) membranes by measuring reflectance variations during capillary filling from both sides. A high-speed camera was employed to capture the reflectance evolution of the entire sample area with the necessary temporal resolution, providing quantitative information on filling dynamics. By integrating these data with a simple fluid dynamic model, it is possible to examine the internal structure of the membranes and determine the effective pore radii profiles along their thickness.

Fluid displacement within layered porous media is more complex than in nonlayered ones. Most of the previous studies placed a focus on the porous media with layerings perpendicular to the flow direction, and the effects of pore topology were often ignored. Therefore, this study aims to reveal the flow physics in porous media with layering parallel to the flow direction by accounting for the specific pore topology.

Soy protein isolate (SPI) possesses potential gelling properties, making it suitable for gel-based applications. However, the gel network stability and mechanical properties of SPI are relatively poor and can be improved through modifications or by combining it with other polymers, such as Konjac Glucomannan (KGM). Combining SPI with KGM can overcome the poor gel network stability and mechanical properties of SPI, but it reduces the water-absorbing capacity of the gel network after drying, which affects the quality characteristics of plant-based protein rehydrated foods and limits the economic feasibility of soy protein foods.

Salt caverns are widely regarded as a suitable option for the underground storage of hydrogen. However, an accurate assessment of the hydrogen leakage through the walls of salt caverns into the surrounding formations remains crucial. In this work, the flow of hydrogen into the surrounding formation is evaluated by assuming that salt rock consists of bundles of tortuous nano-capillary tubes.

Experimental and Computational Synthesis of TiO Sol-Gel Coatings.

Langmuir

January 2025

Department of Physical Chemistry and Materials Science, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Műegyetem rkp. 3, 1111 Budapest, Hungary.

During the experimental formation of sol-gel coatings, the colloid dispersions go through a drying process, and the structure of the coatings is formed as a result of complex chemical, colloidal, and capillary interactions. While computer simulations provide guidelines to tune and even design the nanomaterials synthesis, simulations of coating structure formation are hitherto unknown in the literature. Based on real experiments, we establish here a ReaxFF reactive force field-based molecular dynamics simulation protocol in order to investigate and determine the role of the experimental conditions on the pore structure formation in the coatings.
