Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) has transformed forensic DNA analysis but is still limited when dealing with compromised trace or inhibitor-containing samples. Nanotechnology has been integrated into nanoPCR (nanoparticle-assisted PCR) to overcome these obstacles. Nanomaterials improve PCR sensitivity, selectivity, and efficiency.

The compulsory Mental Healthcare Act (Dutch: Wvggz) provides, in exceptional cases, a legal framework for the implementation of psychiatric and somatic treatment without the patients consent. We describe a pregnant patient with a psychotic disorder who was compulsorily admitted to a psychiatric ward and treated with antipsychotic medication. She was unable to give informed consent regarding obstetric care.

The commentary focuses on the requirements for access to medical assistance in dying in countries where this practice is legal. It shows that the different solutions adopted reflect a different balance between the principles of protection of life, reduction of suffering and respect for autonomy. The article also analyses the potential ethical problems associated with the decision-making capacity of psychiatric patients.
