The modifying effects of atrazine, and/or tamoxifen, on thyroid carcinogenesis were investigated in a rat two-stage carcinogenesis model following N-bis(2-hydroxypropyl)nitrosamine (DHPN) initiation. Five-week-old male F344 rats were given a single subcutaneous injection of DHPN (2800 mg/kg, body weight) or vehicle alone. Starting 1 week later, the animals were fed a diet supplemented with 0, 5, 50 or 500 ppm of atrazine, 500 ppm atrazine plus 5 ppm tamoxifen, or 5 ppm tamoxifen in the DHPN-treated groups, and 0 or 500 ppm of atrazine in the DHPN-untreated groups for 24 weeks. At autopsy major organs, including the thyroid, pituitary, liver, kidney, testis, epididymis, and brain, were collected and histopathologically examined. Body weights were significantly (P<0.05) decreased by the high doses of atrazine or tamoxifen, the effect being enhanced in combination. Relative thyroid weights were significantly increased (P<0.05) only in the tamoxifen-treated group and pituitary weights were elevated with 500 ppm atrazine plus tamoxifen (P<0.05). Relative liver weights were increased by the high dose of atrazine. However, the atrazine and/or tamoxifen treatments did not induce significant histopathological changes in the major organs, including the thyroid, nor cause significant changes in serum TSH levels. These results suggest that neither atrazine nor tamoxifen may promote thyroid carcinogenesis, alone as well as in combination.

The optical detection of arsenic (As) in human biological fluids and environmental water samples is presented using alpha-cyclodextrin-modified silver nanoparticles (α/CyD-AgNPs) at the trace level. This method is based on the measurement of a red shift of the LSPR band of α/CyD-AgNPs in the region of 200-800 nm. The color of α/CyD-AgNPs was changed from yellow to colorless by the addition of As(iii).

Cases of sodium toxicosis (ST), although reported infrequently, can result in acute morbidity and mortality and extensive losses in affected poultry. We analyzed the clinical, pathologic, and toxicologic findings of 7 diagnosed cases of ST in chicken autopsy submissions at the California Animal Health & Food Safety Laboratory System (CAHFS), University of California-Davis, from 2014 to 2023. We also evaluated the brain sodium concentrations in 10 clinically normal broiler chickens to elucidate potential differences with salt-intoxicated chickens, and reviewed the literature of field cases of ST in chickens and turkeys.

The spread and mobilization of toxic heavy metals in the environment have increased to a harmful level in recent years as a result of the fast industrialization occurring all over the world to meet the demands of a rising population. This research aims to analyze and evaluate the mycoremediation abilities of fungal strains that exhibit tolerance to heavy metals, gathered from water samples at Buckingham Canal, Neelankarai, Chennai. Water samples were examined for heavy metal analysis, and the highest toxic heavy metals, Zn, Pb, Mn, Cu, and Cr, were recorded.

This study investigated the effect of isoquinoline alkaloids as an alternative to bacitracin on growth performance, oxidative stress, inflammatory status, and ceca microbiome of broilers raised under high stocking density (HSD). A total of 1,500 one-day-old male Ross 308 chicks were randomly assigned to five treatment groups, with 10 replicate pens per group and 30 birds per pen, for 37 days. The treatments included normal stocking density (NSD, 10 birds/m²), HSD (15 birds/m²), HSD with 50 ppm Bacitracin (BCT50), HSD with 80 ppm isoquinoline alkaloids (IQA80), and HSD with 100 ppm isoquinoline alkaloids (IQA100).

The dosages of colloidal silicon seeds in the seed-induced synthesis of TS-1 zeolites were investigated in detail. The characterization results revealed that the colloidal silicon seeds not only reduced the particle sizes but also promoted the incorporation of titanium atoms into the framework of TS-1 zeolites as prepared. SEM images and particle size distribution (PSD) confirmed that the particle sizes of TS-1 zeolite could be effectively reduced to about 150 nm.
