Fungal pathogens undergo specific morphogenetic transitions in order to breach the outer surfaces of plants and invade the underlying host tissue. The ability to change cell shape and switch between non-polarised and polarised growth habits is therefore critical to the lifestyle of plant pathogens. Infection-related development involves remodelling of the cytoskeleton, plasma membrane and cell wall at specific points during fungal pathogenesis.

In plant cells, linkage between the cytoskeleton, plasma membrane, and cell wall is crucial for maintaining cell shape. In highly polarized pollen tubes, this coordination is especially important to allow rapid tip growth and successful fertilization. Class I formins contain cytoplasmic actin-nucleating formin homology domains as well as a proline-rich extracellular domain and are candidate coordination factors.

The cytoskeleton and its associated proteins present at the plasma membrane not only determine the cell shape but also modulate important aspects of cell physiology such as intracellular transport including secretory and endocytic pathways. Continuous remodeling of the cell structure and intense communication with extracellular environment heavily depend on interactions between cytoskeletal elements and plasma membrane. This review focuses on the plasma membrane-cytoskeleton interface in neurons, with a special emphasis on the axon and nerve endings.
