Published: October 2003

Thiolysis of a variety of 1,2-epoxides in water at 30 degrees C and pH 7.0 is strongly accelerated by ZnCl(2) (10 mol %) except when amino- and carboxythiophenol are used. The aqueous medium and the catalyst were recovered and reused in various runs without affecting the efficiency of the process.

Article Synopsis
  • - The new probe (DN) detects hydrogen sulfide (HS) using a chemical reaction that generates a noticeable color change from yellow to pink and produces red fluorescence in specific conditions.
  • - DN shows excellent performance with a low detection limit of 15.1 nM and a quick response time of 5 minutes, making it effective for sensing HS.
  • - A test kit using paper strips was created for checking meat freshness by detecting HS, and DN can also visualize HS in live cells, aiding research on its link to clinical diseases.

Hydrogen sulfide (HS) acts as a messenger molecule and can mediate a variety of physiological functions. Conventional methods are seldom used to detect endogenous HS and present some difficulties in selective and accurate detection. Reaction-based recognition of endogenous HS by organic small molecule probes with good specificity and biocompatibility.

A new NIR fluorescent probe (DCIQ-2DNP), which combined the thiolysis of dinitrophenyl (DNP) ether and DNP-marked electron-deficient quaternary carbon, was reported for the first time for detection of HS. The DCIQ-2DNP probe showed an NIR emission signal (740 nm), a large Stokes shift (128 nm), and rapid monitoring of hydrogen sulfide (within 60 s) in food samples and living cells.

Ebselen is a drug in clinical trials for several diseases and degenerative conditions where oxidative stress is implicated. A series of novel ebselen analogues was synthesized, including hydroxy-, alkoxy- and aminomethylene derivatives, as well as hybrid species where the ebselen selenium atom is shared with other potent antioxidant structures, such as cyclic selenenyl sulfide, cyclic seleninate ester and spirodioxyselenurane moieties. Conjugates of ebselen with cholesterol, prednisolone and the radical inhibitor BHT were also prepared.

Background: The progress of modern research is constantly fueled by the convergence of multiple technologies. Despite the enormous potential of both fluorescence (FL) and photoelectrochemical (PEC) technologies, the development of synergistic PEC-FL sensing platforms that combine the advantages of both is still in its early stages due to their relatively recent inception. Hydrogen sulfide (HS), possessing dual irritant and asphyxiating traits, poses challenges for environmental preservation and human health.
