Changes in (14)C incorporation into regenerate after bone fracture and impairment of mandibular innervation, and injection of [3-(14)C]cytrate corresponded to the stages of reparative osteogenesis: after 1 week (14)C incorporation in the cellular-fibrous callus surpassed its release, after 2 weeks the rates of (14)C incorporation and release in the chondroid callus become similar, and after 4 weeks the release of the label predominated in the primary bone callus. Denervation reduced (14)C incorporation into regenerate, which impaired bone remodeling. Citrate in the bones is characterized by high metabolic activity.

Carbon use efficiency (CUE) of microbial communities in soil quantifies the proportion of organic carbon (C) taken up by microorganisms that is allocated to growing microbial biomass as well as used for reparation of cell components. This C amount in microbial biomass is subsequently involved in microbial turnover, partly leading to microbial necromass formation, which can be further stabilized in soil. To unravel the underlying regulatory factors and spatial patterns of CUE on a large scale and across biomes (forests, grasslands, croplands), we evaluated 670 individual CUE data obtained by three commonly used approaches: (i) tracing of a substrate C by C (or C) incorporation into microbial biomass and respired CO (hereafter C-substrate), (ii) incorporation of O from water into DNA (O-water), and (iii) stoichiometric modelling based on the activities of enzymes responsible for C and nitrogen (N) cycles.

Local heating of the activity area for nursing piglets is crucial for piglet health and the energy efficiency of barn climate control. Traditional heating methods using lamps or covers lack precise control, result in significant energy waste, and cannot be dynamically adjusted according to piglet age or changing environmental temperatures. To address these issues, this study designed a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC)-based thermal insulation box for nursing piglets, utilizing a strip heater instead of the conventional round heating lamp.

Background: Disturbed white adipose tissue function is important for cardiometabolic risk and metabolic syndrome (MetS). Whether this involves adipose lipid turnover (lipolysis and synthesis of triglycerides) is unknown and was presently investigated in subcutaneous adipose tissue, the body's largest fat depot.
Methods: In cross-sectional studies in 78 subjects, adipose lipid age, representing overall lipid turnover (mobilization and storage), and lipid storage capacity were assessed by the incorporation of atmospheric C into adipose lipids.
The tusk of the male narwhal is a prolonged canine tooth, reaching a size of up to 3 m in length. The tusk erupts through the young narwhal's upper left lip and, over time, develops into an elongated structure composed of dentine growth layers with an outer coating of cementum. In this study, we utilized bomb radiocarbon (C) to estimate the ages of three narwhal tusks, which allowed us to validate the assumption that one growth layer is deposited annually in narwhal tusks.
