Elderly humans often not only experience peripheral hearing loss but also suffer from more central deficits in temporal auditory processing affecting speech perception. Impaired auditory temporal resolution has also been observed in old rodents. Other studies have demonstrated a reduction of GABAergic function in the auditory pathway of old animals. Here we test the hypothesis that deficits in the GABAergic system affect central auditory processing. Our data suggests that pharmacological augmentation of the GABAergic system ameliorates impaired temporal auditory processing in the gerbil and might be a strategy for the treatment of at least some forms of central hearing loss in humans.

The preferred period hypothesis posits a slowing down of motor and perceptual rhythmic preferences with age, both reflecting an increase in the common internal oscillation period. This study further investigates the preferred period hypothesis by improving the measurement of perceptual rhythmic preferences through two tasks, tempo adjustment and tempo judgment, conducted in auditory and visual modalities. The study was conducted with three groups of children (5-6, 8-9, and 11-12 years old), and a group of young adults (21 to 30 years old) during the same time of the day.

Periodic sensory inputs entrain oscillatory brain activity, reflecting a neural mechanism that might be fundamental to temporal prediction and perception. Most environmental rhythms and patterns in human behavior, such as walking, dancing, and speech do not, however, display strict isochrony but are instead quasi-periodic. Research has shown that neural tracking of speech is driven by modulations of the amplitude envelope, especially via sharp acoustic edges, which serve as prominent temporal landmarks.

Auditory perception requires categorizing sound sequences, such as speech or music, into classes, such as syllables or notes. Auditory categorization depends not only on the acoustic waveform, but also on variability and uncertainty in how the listener perceives the sound - including sensory and stimulus uncertainty, the listener's estimated relevance of the particular sound to the task, and their ability to learn the past statistics of the acoustic environment. Whereas these factors have been studied in isolation, whether and how these factors interact to shape categorization remains unknown.
