Background: Married or long-term partnered patients with chronic diseases generally have better outcomes than unmarried patients, likely due to the potential for multifaceted support. However, the impact of marital status on multiple sclerosis (MS) radiographic disease burden is currently unknown.

Objective: To compare total white matter hyperintensity lesion volumes, periventricular lesion volumes, and whole brain and grey matter volumes in married and unmarried people with MS (PwMS).

Background: The proportion of people living with HIV (PLWHIV) co-infected with HCV in Mexico was unknown. Our aim was to estimate the seroprevalence of HCV among adults with HIV in Mexico.

Methods: Using a complex-survey design, we collected blood samples and applied structured questionnaires between May 2nd, 2019 and February 17th, 2020 in a nationally, representative sample of adults receiving care for HIV-infection in 24 randomly selected HIV-care centres in 8 socio-demographically regions in Mexico.

Friedreich Ataxia: An (Almost) 30-Year History After Gene Discovery.

Neurol Genet

February 2025

Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, McGill University, Montreal, Canada.

In the late 1800s, Nikolaus Friedreich first described "degenerative atrophy of the posterior columns of the spinal cord," noting its connection to progressive ataxia, sensory loss, and muscle weakness, now recognized as Friedreich ataxia (FRDA). Renewed interest in the disease in the 1970s and 80s by the Quebec Cooperative Group and by Anita Harding led to the development of clinical diagnostic criteria and insights into associated biochemical abnormalities, although the primary defect remained unknown. In 1988, Susan Chamberlain mapped FRDA's location on chromosome 9.

Coccidioidomycosis is a potentially serious but poorly studied mycosis in Ecuador. It is not a notifiable infection; therefore, its true incidence and prevalence in Ecuador remain unknown. Because primary lung disease due to coccidioidomycoses is typically self-limiting, it does not usually require treatment.

Premise: Primroses famously employ a system that simultaneously expresses distyly and filters out self-pollen. Other species in the Primulaceae family, including Lysimachia monelli (blue pimpernel), also express self-incompatibility (SI), but involving a system with distinct features and an unknown molecular genetic basis.

Methods: We utilize a candidate-based transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq) approach, relying on candidate T2/S-RNase Class III and S-linked F-box-motif-containing genes and harnessing the unusual evolutionary and genetic features of SI, to examine whether an RNase-based mechanism underlies SI in L.
